I have 2 Hp Printers, 3820 and 3420 Deskjet Models. They are not compatible with W8/8.1 as HP haven't produced any drivers.
Anyone got ideas on what to do apart from sell/dump the printers? Neil.

Hi Neil. I would try installing Windows 7 drivers for the printers if they are available and see if that allows the printers to work.

Thanks guys but I've tried the alternative Model Drivers and W8.1 doesn't want to know them. Neil.

Thanks Bill, they are certainly W7 drivers but they won't work in W8/8.1 and I'm not on my own apparently. HP Forums have quite a few people with a similar problem.
If you want the printers to work in W7 - fine. Bottom line - HP only want to sell more printers and even though their older printers are still working in XP - they want you to upgrade your printers.
I'll just do a shuffle around with what we have.
I'll leave this open at the moment and hope someone might stumble on a fix. Neil.

Here's how to try the win7 drivers:

    1. Download the drivers.

    2. Extract them. HP uses a type of zip file. Extract using 7zip or similar program, or just double click the download. Usually the files are extracted to the user temp dir: users/your username/appdata/local/temp

    3. Do NOT run the setup program, if it starts automatically, cancel it.

    4. Locate the drivers folder and use printer install wizard to browse to the win7 driver.

    5. You don't need all the other bundled stuff like ink monitor, hp ink sales link, etc.

Vista, W7, and W8/8.1 all share the same driver database so MOST older drivers will work on the newer OSes. But I am not going to pretend, or insult you by suggesting that is the case here - but unless you have tried those, I would not automatically discount the possibility.

I have used Vista and W7 drivers for several older HP devices in W8/W8.1 with no problems.

That's really not a fair statement. These printers are 12 years old and cost less than $100 when new! Expecting that sort of support - through 3 future OS generations is unreasonable expectations.

BTW, something to bookmark: HP Printers Not Supported in Windows 8 and Supported Printers for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.

Unable to get HP drivers on their own and as soon as W8.1 is sensed - everything stops. I'll close this Thread and use a later/newer printer that's compatible. Thanks for the input. Neil.

Well, sorry it came to this but I have to say I just recently got rid of nearly 900lbs of perfectly good, but obsolete CRT monitors, ink and laser printers, AT (from before ATX) cases, old power supplies, and a bunch of perfectly good but small EIDE hard drives and other stuff that have been collecting dust and taking up space for too many years because I never got around to finding someway to make them useful again.

Obsolescence = one of the many costs of advancing technologies.

The wife has a few months left (with care) to use the ink up, then the "Ewaste" group can have them. I don't have a truck load (900lbs) - thank goodness! Neil.
