    Hi,
i have my cd/roms installed like this; CD-RW as master/CD-rom as slave. My question is, can i use my cd-rom to play games or listen to music cd's? Right now when i try, the comp always ask to insert the disc in drive D (master drive). The reason i ask is, i just replaced my CD/RW and i would like to put some ware on the cdrom (slave drive) instead of always using my cd/rw (master drive). If there is any way to do this or is that the way it is?
thanks and have a Happy New Year.

    Hi ozzydawg

    Untill somone else answers
go into device manager and enable autoplay and digital cd audio on that device --disable on the other
    autoplay or (auto incert notifacation)
Highlight the device in device manager--properties --settings
also on the properties tab is enable digital cd audio for this cd-rom device .

Or did you already know this ?

You can play games on the cdrom. When you installed the games which drive were they installed from. If they were installed from the d: drive that's where they'll look for the game. Was your cdrom the d: drive before you installed the cdrw? You can try a couple of things. Look in the folders that the games are located in and see if there's an .ini file of any kind. If so, open it in notepad and see if there's a reference to the d: drive. If it's there, change it to whatever letter the cdrom drive is. Some games will have this and others may not. If a game doesn't have such a thing in it's folder it may be in the registry where it looks for the drive or I've seen some that will put an .ini file in the windows folder which is a bit tougher to track down as you don't know the name of it. Usually it will have a name similar to the game.

If no luck doing this you could try uninstalling the game, reboot and then reinstall it using the cdrom drive.

One other thing you could try would be to change the drive letters in the device manager (if it will alow it). If you're using win9x here's how you do it (can't help with xp etc.) In the device manager click the plus next to cdrom and then double click on the one you want to change and then click on the settings tab. Enter the drive letter you want to change it to where says start drive letter and also in end drive letter. If you do this I would first change the d: drive to something other than d or e (if that's the letter of the other drive) and then reboot. Then go back into the device manager and change the other one to d, reboot and if you want you can then go and change the cdrw to the drive letter that the cdrom was. Be aware however, if you do this it could cause problems for any other programs that require a the cd to run (including greeting card programs etc.) if they were installed from the drive letter that is presently your cdrom because those programs would then want to use the cdrw.

    Thanks guys.

Lonnyjones1---i had tried that, but no such luck. thanks anyway.

Zander--Did i install everything with my D: drive (master cd/rw)? the answer is yes. My cd/rw was always the D: drive, and my cd/rom was always the E: drive. I will look in the game folders this evening and if i can't find any reference to the D: drive, i will go ahead and un/re install using the E: drive and see if that works. Thanks again.

Ok. I think that reinstalling would be the easiest. Should take care of the problem.

Try switching drives as Master/Slave, then Windows should(?) switch drive letters.

May save a lot of reinstalling.

BTW: do you have two audio cables (for each drive) to your sound card? One needs to go to AUX in.

    Thanks to all.
mattman--i did switch the drives and still had to insert cd into D: drive, so i reinstalled a flight sim game using the E: drive and i had no problems running the game with the cd in the E: drive.(i tried running the game in both drives with no probs) I still have to use the D: drive for older installs, so this weekend i will un/re install all the games using the E: drive, and all should be ok..,.,.,.,.,.,. hopefully. thanks again
