I have a Dell 8200 computer, running Windows XP. I'm trying to install my Nikon 4000ED film scanner - which came with a Ratoc Firewire card (PCIFW2).

Windows sees the Firewire card just fine, but doesn't see the Nikon scanner that is attached. I've installed a new Firewire cable, but that didn't work.

This scanner worked just fine on my old machine (with 98SE).

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

    No luck yet

Thanks for your posting! I'm still unable to solve my problem.

I had already found these files on the Nikon site. The "full version installer" is what I've loaded. I can't, however, install the driver - because Windows XP doesn't recognize the Nikon scanner (and I don't know how to install a driver, if XP "new hardware wizard" can't find the device).

Microsoft has a Knowledge Base article (#329256) about a bug affecting 1394 devices "Inconsistent Gap Count Can Cause 1394 Devices to Not Enumerate ". I thought this might be the problem, and applied the hotfix, and then uninstalled / reinstalled my scanner hardware and software, but the problem still exists.

I've tried moving the 1394 card to a different slot. And also removing the Matrox video hardware and software (thinking that might be causing a conflict, although nothing is shown on Device Manager).

I'm stuck again. Don't know what else to try.

    Thanks for your help!

    scanner

Have the nikon cd cd in the tray, close all open windows, now open control panel & click on scanners & cameras icon, then click the ADD Device icon. From here the wizard comes up but select next then HAVE DISK & continue.........pointing to your driver cd in tray:)

Hi Rancher - Thanks for your posting, but I can't get this to work.

    1) I click "Add device" in Scanners and Cameras
    2) I get the selection screen for "which scanner or camera do you want to install ".
    3) I selected "Have Disk" - and then pointed to the INF file on my CD
    4) It sends me back to a blank screen for "which scanner or camera do you want to install "

So, while I can point to the LS4000XP.inf file, the installation wizard won't accept it.

Note: I don't think my 1394 card is the issue, either, since I just plugged in my new printer to that card, and XP recognizes the printer just fine.

    Hi MGedlinske

This is a shot in the dark. IF you, they, us.. think it is a XP issue, try installing your scanner in capabilty mode and choose a lower OS. .. 2K, w98SE .... Just a last ditch thought. Your 1st post mention it DID work when in w98SE. Good Luck.

Don't know if you've sorted your scanner problem, but I installed one for a friend today on XP Pro with no problems.

Win XP recognised the Firewire card - no idea what make, but it came with the scanner.

Loaded up Nikon Scan 3.1.2 (the XP version, download from Nikon if you do not have it) - switched on the scanner and everything worked fine!
