I have a Dell Studio XPS (435MT). It will not power on. I have searched many forums regarding this issue and the consensus seems to be that I need to replace the power supply. I have never replaced a power supply before. Can anyone direct me regarding what to look for when buying one? I know I need to make sure it fits inside the case (it's a tight fit in this unit, apparently). Also I know that the one I am replacing is a 475W Power Supply). Do I need the exact same wattage? What else should I look for? Thanks.

Hi IceWine, Have you confirmed that the Start button/switch is not faulty?
I'm not conversant with Dell PSU's, but a few manufacturers use dedicated PSU's.
These are specific in mounting points and output wattage.
If Dell use a standard ATX PSU, you may be able to install a larger output unit than the current one.
My first job would be to ascertain whether the PSU is faulty. I would try it in another comp if possible (if you haven't got a PSU tester).
PSU's can be supplied with 20pin and 24pin connectors and the other leads and connectors will also determine your needs, so be careful when purchasing a replacement. Neil.

Thanks, Neil. I do not have another computer to test it in but from what I have read this is a common fault with this particular computer. So I guess I am assuming that since my symptoms are exactly the same as others, that I fix the problem with the PS replacement. Thanks for your input - it is a 24-pin connector, I have determined that much. :)

OK, just ensure that the leads are compatible and that it's Standard PSU size. Extra capacity will depend on your requirements. Make sure you disconnect from the wall power socket before you start or you may end up with a Phyllis Diller hairdo. Neil.
