Security expert Avira announced today that it has launched its free PC Cleaner product to all English speaking markets worldwide.

Originally launched in Germany at the request of the German Federal Bureau for Information Security (BSI) to clean up a critical botnet, Avira PC Cleaner is now available globally to scan and remove these botnet backdoors as well as other viruses, Trojans, spyware and malware that one’s existing antivirus software might have missed.

Download links are available at the end of the article.

    Not yet, Neil.

The weather has been in the 70s today, so I got outside and did some diabetes walking. I plan to try the program soon.

I clicked on the shortcut at the end of the article, from post #1, and downloaded a small file to my desktop. The file works like a download manager and downloads program definitions. After accepting the legal documentation you are given the choice of a regular scan or a full scan. The regular scan turned up nothing, and I am still waiting on the full scan to complete.

I guess I'll be including this tool in my anti-malware arsenal.

Completed the full scan, and the tool found something called NirCmd.exe as a possible trojan. I clicked on the findings and was directed to an Avira database, but it came up blank.

I should've taken a snip of the findings because this tool has no stored records of previous scans, although it will undo anything it cleans. I can't remember ever installing anything related to NirCmd.exe, but maybe I did sometime back.

For what it's worth, you can install the Avira scanning tool on a USB drive.

You're lucky being able to do a walk. My knee flares up during the day walking around the house. I'm due to see the orthopaedic specialist 27th. next month.
I'm riding a mobility scooter to get around the 18 holes on the golf course.

I've Downloaded the PC scan and will try it out and report back. Neil.

I fell down at work on my left knee about 12 years ago and did some minor damage according to an MRI scan. However, the doctor told me that I was way ahead of the game as far as joint deterioration goes, and I am very thankful.

My 85 year old mother fell and broke part of her hip bone in December, but she appears to be healing up well. The doctor attributed much of this to my mother's avid mobility in her senior years.

Post back with your scan results.

I'm basically a walking brace. I have to use a walker with a seat. Braces on both knees, back brace, etc. Three operations on right knee, possible surgery on left knee. Four pinched nerves in the neck C3, C4, C6, and C7. But I still try to walk every day weather permitting and if I feel like putting all the braces on. But, every day is a good day when you wake up in the morning.

I've been without cartilage in the right knee for 36 years but it's catching up fast. Knee joint should fix it.
The problem has been walking the golf courses for the last 25 years and doing this around 300 times per year - weather permitting. I click and creak everytime I walk these days.

Quick scan showed OS clean James. Trust Avira to push their AV product at the end of the scan. I'm also wondering if there will be a "Splash screen Ad "
appear randomly as it did with their AV software when I tried it a few years ago. That "splash screen" was the annoyance that made me uninstall it.

lj50, I bow to your medical problems - mine are minor compared to yours. All the best Neil.

Yours and James medical problems are nothing to sneeze at. We all woke up this morning. That's huge plus. To bad the sun isn't shining.

Thanks, Whiskeyman. My initial research led me to the same page, but I can't remember ever downloading a file from there, but the site looks somewhat familiar to me.

I haven't seen anything like that yet, Neil.

I ran the tool on XP, also, and it came up clean.

    Let me second that.

Lj, I read a few threads back where your A1C was 4.9. That is very good indeed!

Yes lj50 the sun was/is shining and the grass was green and I was on the top of it. You can add a quintuple heart bypass and a DX of myeloma (smouldering) plus both biceps popped and rotator cuff repair and carpal tunnel release to both wrists since I retired in 2002.
You go through your working life without a day off - you retire - and your body starts falling apart. I want a refund - just kidding. Thank God the brain still functions. Neil.

Now I bow to you. I like the comment "I want a refund." I want one to. If I had it to do all over, I wouldn't change a thing.
