I did make my recovery disks, but can't make a repair disk. I keep getting a dialog box popping up reading there is a problem with making a disk microsoft will let you know when the problem is solved...

I did have Dell send me a driver disk and reinstallation disk. The reinstallation disk still won't let me boot the system like a repair disk will, from the optical drive though will it?

    Dell insprion 15 W-7 Premium 64bit

    Thanks

What choices were you given to make copies?
You're only allowed to make one copy/image if I remember the choice I was given. Neil.

He means "repair disk ". Unlimited # can be made. This is a bootable cd that loads recovery tools, i.e. recovery console.

I was going to go to the dell website and see if Dell has a support forum like HP does. You could also check, join the forum and post your problem there. Service Tag that either so you or me can check the service manual for your particular model.

I talked to Dell and they said the problem was on MS' end. That is why Dell puy it's own "Dell Backup and Recovery" program in their units.

I will go to the sites James posted and see what I can find out..

For what it's worth, I just created a repair disk for my Dell Windows 7 64-bit system via the "Create A System Repair Disc" tool from Microsoft.

EDIT: I wasted a DVD. The file size was only 185 Mb.

I'm thinking this is a Windows 7 installation disk, so, yes, it should.

James I went to Dell groups as you suggested and found a fix, I think.

    http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/p/19425744/20006222.aspx#20006222

I am getting the exact same screen as shown in the first post when I try to create a repair disk form my laptop. I tried tony's link and I had no problem creating a disk. Not sure if it is for 32 or 64 bit though.

Someone else asked and that was the last post no reply if it is for 32 or 64.
I hope this works if I need it....

I downloaded the same ISO from that link, and the file size was 141 Mb - which is smaller than the repair disk I recently made (185 Mb), and my system is 64-bit.

I'm not sure if the 141 Mb file is 32 or 64-bit, but I am thinking it may be 32-bit.

You can always create a repair disk from another 64-bit Windows 7 machine, but your Dell reinstall disk offers the same repair option.

If I run the re installation DVD Dell sent me, what should I look for to see if it's there. Will it prompt me to go to the recovery screen?

After you boot from the installation disk, you'll see the option to install Windows, or repair the current setup. I don't have the necessary screenshots available, but the prompts are not that difficult to follow. Even if you select to install Windows 7, you'll still have a 2nd chance go the repair route.
