Has anyone else attempted to use Sandboxie in Windows 8.1? I liked using it in XP, but my browsers freeze up when I attempt to use it in 8.1. I checked Sandboxie forums, and the only suggestion anyone had was to disable flash protected mode, which doesn't fix the problem. I have the same problem in Chrome, Firefox and IE. I have uninstalled Sandboxie and then downloaded it again, only to have the same problem. I sense something about 8.1 and Sandboxie is incompatible. Does anyone know what it might be?

Does your antivirus have a sandbox option? If it does, maybe you could use that instead.

I just use Windows Defender that comes with Win8, and I'm not aware of any sandbox option it has.

Do you know of a better free AV program I could use with 8.1?

Windows Defender provides decent baseline security, but some say that Avast is better, and it also provides a sandbox option. I have Avast, installed, but I have never used the sandbox option on Windows 7.

    Interesting reading:
Please read and agree to the End-User License Agreement before downloading and installing the software.

    Download: Sandboxie Installer 4.08 (for Windows XP SP 3 through Windows 8.1; 32-bit + 64-bit) (~2.5 MB) (md5/sha1)

    Download from TechSpot

    Download from this site

Upgrade: If you have an earlier version of Sandboxie already installed, you can let the installer upgrade (overwrite) your existing installation.

*After installing Sandboxie, please review the Getting Started tutorial in the Help Topics page. You may also wish to consult Usage Tips. If you have any problems getting Sandboxie to work, please consult Known Conflicts first.*

Have you read this Barry? Neil.

James, the review sounded good, until I read the comments. Here are the ones that concerned me:

    1) So did you all consider the fact that when I get into your systems that I can turn off all but Windows Defender and/or Windows Security Essentials? I bet no one thought of that fact. Microsoft built that av so that it becomes a required service for the system to continue to function properly Avast, AVG, Symantec, or any third party AV or software can be disable remotely be a crafty hacker. If I attempt to remotely disable MS/E or MS/D you will blue screen the system thus alerting the end user that they have a problem with there system.

    2) Round 6: annoying advertising begging you to upgrade every time you start up, click or just look at your av.
    Winner: Windows defender

    and most importantly...
    3) I'd actually consider Avast if they could crank out a version that would work with Windows 8.1

    1) Is it easy to turn off third party AV? 2) Is it truly annoying? and 3) My having 8.1 seems to make all other points moot.

Neil -- Yes, I read that. You notice it says it works on 8.1, yet others on their forum complain about problems with 8.1, and it wasn't listed in their "Known Conflicts." Maybe I'm not picking up on something you are reading there.

Any other comments or suggestions out there?

I was amazed at the number of Conflicts listed:
    http://www.sandboxie.com/index.php?KnownConflicts

It might just pay to wait until they (Sandboxie) sort things out.
As you said you're using Windows Defender only - there may be a tweak needed in there. Neil.

Interesting point. I'd like to hear what some of the others have to say about it.

I've been computing for 11 years, and I have yet to have my anti-virus (AVG, and now Avast) protection turned off by hackers. Not saying that it couldn't happen, but with a properly layered defense of various malware programs and an educated user, I seriously doubt that a hacker would trouble himself to break into such a machine - unless it was something of much value.

In addition, Windows 8 / 8.1 is supposed to be more robust against hackers according to some of the experts here. Bill has commented on this in-depth if I remember correctly.

I haven't found that to be the case - at least to the point where it would aggravate me. Most of the upgrade ads appear in the lower-right corner where the auto-update messages occur. These are small boxes with text-based info for the most part. The only time you see a major ad is when the program itself needs to update, and that is not very often.

I can't vouch for how well Avast runs, or doesn't run, with Windows 8 / 8.1 as I have had limited use with the operating system. In addition, notice that these comments you read are six months old, and I am sure that some of the bugs (if any) have been fixed by now.

I find it interesting that Sandboxie seems to work fine on my backup drive, but not on my main drive. What might be the reason for that?
