When creating a manual system restore point before doing work, I see that under available drives is Recovery, it is highlighted by default, and OS C: system is my other choice.

I have been doing both. what is the difference. I just got this last week and have more questions, but I will start another thread for those.

    W-7 premium 64 bit

    Thanks Gary....

I have Windows 7, too, but system restore is listed as off for my recovery drive. I remember trying to turn it back on, but it defaulted back to the off postition.

Is there any reason for Windows 7 to make a restore point of the recovery partition?

^ Interesting James. When I first looked at my options for creating a manual restore point at first, Recovery was default but protection was turned off, and OC (C) system was turned on. Now both are turned on.

I see you have a Dell, also, as do I.

I'm a bit green in this area, but it seems to me that a recovery partition should not be a part of system restore?

    I found this at Dell...

Is it necessary for Windows system restore to include the recovery partition?

    No it is not necessary.

System Restore just goes back in time--a few days or weeks--and restores the C drive. It doesn't use the Recovery Partition that contains Factory Settings. After some time the recovery partition can become unusable or out of date. You should also make a System Image to store on an external Hard Drive. It will contain everything--windows, programs and files--a complete snapshot of your current hard drive. That is better than going back to Factory Settings from several years ago. That would requires reinstalling years of updates and all your personal files and programs. You should make a Repair Disk to boot to so you can access all your Recovery Options if the hard drive cannot be used.
