    Happy New Year to All!!

    Question:

Does Win98SE install DirectX and how can I find out what version I have? All I can find is a Setup folder containing DXDiag shortcut.

I need the version because I want to purchase a multimedia program that has a specific DirectX requirement. Also will updating DirectX cause problems on my Pentium 133?

    Thanks! and don't overdue it tonight.....hahaha! [8D][:D][8D]

Click Start > Run > type dxdiag and click OK. It will be listed in 'System Information'

Probably should use ver 8.1 get here

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...91-d45d-4122-8230-69f3e5ecdede&displaylang=en

Has been some problems installing and after install with 9.0 just released from beta. Be safe for now upgrade to 9.0 later.

Download the file (save to disk) not install on line.

    Then

In prep cleanup all temps ad/spyware. Stop as many startups as you can use MSCONFIG. Even virus scanners and firewalls. Reboot to make sure they don't load.

Do the install. Then reenable them all back.

It is the way I would do it!

    10-4 Alice.

My fast scan of her message. I see that now! She only wanted to know the ver. and if it works leave it alone.

I bet you agree to be careful of 9.0 though!

    Hi Mike,

I see that you gave the link to DX8.1 and NOT DirectX 9! ;)

Ann, DirectX cannot be uninstalled by usual means. My feeling is to leave directX alone UNLESS you have a very good reason to upgrade, then get the minimum you need.

    The DirectX9 FAQs tell you:
If you are having other problems after installing DirectX 9.0, these can often be resolved by installing updated drivers for your display card, audio card, or input device. BUT what happens if you can't get updated drivers?

    THANKS TO ALL!!

I checked and I do have 6.1a. That is just fine for the software I got. I am very leary about updating things, as you Alice, well know. I have heard about DirectxX causing problems. So I will stay with what I have.

This board is the best! I always find the help I need and you guys are so generous and informed.

If you drink tonight, please do not drive!

    :D :D :D I sure do :D :D :D

I was afraid you would see Mike's reply before mine and needlessly install DX8.1 but I shouldn't have worried
    :p
If nothing else Mike's signature would have scared you off for sure
