Not really surprising - definition updates are. of course, security updates and there is little point in providing security software which will not be updated after April 8.

Really, are You sure? I mean, MSE is a program that until April 8 can be installed on XP, Vista and 7 but after April 8 on Vista and 7. Definition updates will be delivered but if MS makes them NOT install on XP then they take the prize!

I anticipated smart comments like that ... ... but against better judgement, posted my question anyway.

    To clarify:

This means that the next (?) version of MSE itself will not install on XP. The previous one that people have downloaded locally will still install on XP.

I was trying to discuss the definition updates which have nothing to do with a "rusted heap" but possibly with a slightly discoloured version of MSE.

Microsoft no longer wants to waste any time or money trying to protect Windows XP.

In its day it worked great. But it's based on old, outdated technology and can't be "fixed ". So they're pulling the plug.

    Time to move on.

You still don't understand my question. MSE is a separate, self-contained application on its own or am I missing something?

Isn't MSE now Windows Defender. Windows Defender is what is listed in the control panel on my win 7 machine.

If I recall correctly, Defender comes with Windows 7 but is substituted by MSE when that application is downloaded and installed.

MSE is a separate application but I believe that Microsoft will release a new version of MSE that won't run on Windows XP. As for the version of MSE that is already installed on Windows XP machines I am assuming that definition updates will no longer install on the older versions. Therefore MSE will essentially be useless on Windows XP machines after support ends.

Microsoft no longer wants to support XP . . . via updates or through MSE.

Ay a time that Microsoft should be more consumer friendly, they show that couldn't care less.

The costs involved of keeping MSE updated for XP wouldn't amount to anything more than a rounding 'error' on their income statement.

But rather annoy some of their old customers...

Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP

Q: Can I install Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows 8?
    A: No.
"Windows 8 *already* has a full antivirus/antimalware product installed. Windows Defender on Windows 8 is more like MSE than like Windows Defender on older versions of Windows.
    See: http://experts.windows.com/w/experts_wiki/163.aspx

Q: How is Microsoft Security Essentials different from Windows Defender (XP/Vista/7)?
A: Windows Defender on XP/Vista/7 detects and removes known spyware only. It is not designed to protect against the full breadth of malicious software, and specifically does not prevent viruses, worms, Trojans, and other malicious software from infecting your machine.

Q: Is Microsoft Security Essentials (XP/Vista/7)designed to replace Windows Defender?
A: No but if you are running Microsoft Security Essentials, you do not need to run Windows Defender. Microsoft Security Essentials is designed to disable Windows Defender in order to manage the PC’s real-time protection, including anti-virus, rootkits, Trojans and spyware.

Q: Does installing Microsoft Security Essentials (XP/Vista/7) disable Windows Defender?
A: Microsoft Security Essentials should disable Windows Defender on Vista and Windows 7 and uninstall it from XP. In some cases, this does not happen automatically.

Q: What happens if I do not disable or uninstall Windows Defender if I am using Microsoft Security Essentials (XP/Vista/7)?
A: If Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Defender are both running, your system may experience performance degradation and other problems caused by the conflict of two services providing real time protection simultaneously.

    Evan,

On April 9, I will find out on an old LapTop running MSE on XP SP3 if definition updates are downloaded and installed.

    Arie,

Even if your take on the matter is correct, I actually believe that MS will spend money on making MSE itself and definition updates incompatible with XP. I think it is enough with a few lines instructing the installer, after identifying XP as the OS, to abort the installation, even if the program actually IS compatible with XP.

I can understand that new versions of MSE and/or Defender will be incompatible with XP but making the current version and future definition updates incompatible is contra productive in terms of security. Everyone (well, I can think of a few exceptions ... ...) knows that not all XP machines will be scrapped on April 9 and making them as vulnerable as possible is not the solution.

Microsoft Security Essentials will still work then after support has ended but without the security updates being provided by Microsoft, you should still move to Windows 7 or Windows 8 if you have the resources to do so.
