I'm at a friends place for about two more days, so I need to crack this one fast.

She is using Windows-ME with Word 97. Over the internet (hotmail) someone sent her a word document which was supposed to include an embeded picture.

But the document won't open on word 97.
Assuming that the document is on a later version of Word, I searched the raw ASCII contents (using notepad, then also later with running EDIT through COMMAND.COM) looking for the string, "MSWordDoc - Word.Document.8" or similar which I usually find at the end of Word documents. There was no such similar string. Instead, the document was suddenly cut of amid a whole jumble of ASCII characters.

...so maybe the document is the wrong version for us to open, or maybe it's been corrupted (cut short?) during the send (???)

Searching through the doument (in notepad) we were able to exctract the text (unencrypted) and we also found what appears to be the embedded photograph section, beginning with the string, "Microsoft Picture It! version 4 Picture ".

What is this "Picture It! "? We are on Windows-ME with Word 97 and I don't think we have this program.

Is there something we should download in order to get the picture from this file? Is our Word document corrupt or could it be that if the sender used Win-XP to make / sent the document that would explain the missing "Word.Document.8" which I had expected at somewhere near end of the document?

    Hi Lancer
Before you go to a whole heap fo trouble, get the sender to send the attachment again. More often than not, it's the fault of the sender.

    Thanks Daizy,

Apparently, the sender does not even have his own computer and used a scanner from a cyber cafe to post the original message.

My friend has tried contacting the sender via 'phone to suggest the attachment failed, but only got an answering service, so he must be on holiday.

I think I might save the *.eml to floppy and seek a cyber cafe with Win-XP over here to see if it works.

Other than that, any more reveleations / suggestions very welcome.

I'd doubt that the operating system would have an effect on viewing the attachment. You might want to try a Word Viewer though?

    Tanks again Daizy.

The Word viewer did not suceed, nor did my trying to open the document (saved to floppy) on a machine with XP in a computer maret down town. Guess the file must have got cut short somehow. Can't figure out how he'd have done that, but there you go.

Sorry you had no luck Lancer. Perhaps when the sender returns home.....they'll give it another go?
