What exactly does regcleaner do? Does it affect your programs or just remove unneeded registration info? I ran it & got a ton of stuff listed, but have NO CLUE what I should or should not keep so I just backed out & left it alone.

    Cleans registy!

On the first page that comes up you can pick the item that you want ro remove.

You would only remove an item that you had uninstalled. If you uninstalled a program and then found it here then it was not completely uninstalled. So tag and remove. But only things you know should not be on the computer. Usually these are programs you have removed already.

Otherwise never tag and remove an item here! You must be absolutely certain.

Now in RegCleaner if you go to Tools-Registry Cleanup-Do them all then you can and should remove these. There may be many here but it is ok to remove!

Cleaning the registry will almost always increase your speed and stability!

The reason I reccomended it and the DOS cleanups is to clean the slate of other possible problems in order to uncover your current problem!

    Got it.

Thank you, Mike. You are a wealth of knowledge. I didn't realize I knew so little about computers!

ppmint As you become more familiar with RegCleaner, you'll see several other things that it can do for you. It can remove items from the Windows various Start-Up areas; it can remove any shell extensions that you don't use or want; it can remove unneeded entries from the right-click New menu; it can clean up your Add/Remove list of any "orphaned items" that have no program associations; and that's all in addition to cleaning the registry of remnants of long since deleted programs.

It makes a backup copy of any of the items you choose to delete so that you can put them back if you have any remorse. All the items I mentioned are plainly accessible by clicking on the various words appearing in the menu atop the main screen field.

If you use the least bit of good judgement in your selection of actions, RegCleaner will see to it that you don't have any problems. You'll generally be ok deleting things that you know as opposed to deleting something just to see if it hurts anything. When in doubt, leave it alone.

    Cheers. :)
ps. For the benefit of anyone else reading this post, do not confuse RegCleaner with any other product with nearly the same name. This is the one and only and it come from here. The latest version is Ver. 4.3.0.780

    Thank you

I wish I knew half as much about this stuff as I used to think I did. I'm glad I discovered this site (by a search in Yahoo!) This all started with a noncompliant printer & as I get more involved in trying to solve the problem I find out just how much I don't know. If you know anything about hardware see my post there & give it a whirl! It's been a wild ride & I'm still not there. Poor Mike has been trying to get me up & running, but the stupid printer just doesn't want to cooperate. :( I did get a pesky download off my computer, though. All of you are Waaaaaaay Cool!!! Keep up the good work!
