Set the boot priority #1 to removable devices - plugged in a bootable memory stick - restart the computer and it boots up from the hard drive

Which bootable program do you have installed on the USB device?

    I've used Rufus with success.

Did you have the usb device plugged in to the machine when you changed the boot order in the BIOS and did you remember to exit and save changes. Also did you format the usb stick for use with NTFS.

Tried both a recovery partition downloaded to a 64gig usb and small formatted for ntfs bootable usb.
I probably did not have the usb plugged in when I changed the boot order why would that matter?

On my HP there are 2 ways to change the boot order. First method I hit Esc then F9 from the start menu that doesn't offer the option to boot from a USB drive. Second method I hit Escape then F10 to enter the BIOS I highlight System Configuration then Boot Order and there is an option to boot from a USB drive.

I have a gateway which uses <delete> to enter the bios which provides a boot order priority

Sorry, I should have asked you what OS you were using. I went by your My System and it showed Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on one drive and have Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit on another drive. I swap the drives depending which thread I reply to. I'm glad you figured it out and resolved the problem. Good work.

Sorry about that - I've redone my system specs to show my new computer.

So, I take it that a USB drive has to be plugged in before the boot order can be changed to boot from a USB drive in Windows 8?

No - The boot priority sequence can be revised in my Gateway DX4870 in the bios without the usb plugged in

However that doesn't mean it will boot to the usb if there is a bootable usb plugged in.
I have to enable the boot menu in the bios so that the message 'f12 for boot menu' appears and then I can select the usb to boot the system
