I'm running Windows Media Player 12 in Windows 7.

Every time I try to play a ripped CD, Media Player tries to download usage rights / license from the web using the default browser, but I get this error message...

The license cannot be downloaded because your Web browser is not supported.

To download a license, you must install Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 or later.

To install the latest version of Internet Explorer, see the Windows Update page.

Making IE 11 the default browser does no good. Some are saying to use another media player, but that is ridiculous. There has to be a way to remedy this outside of re-ripping the CDs. I hope IE 11 is not the problem since it is a new browser.

For what it's worth, I migrated my music library from XP Home. Evidently, XP added copy protection to some of these ripped files. Any music I rip to Windows 7 is not copy protected.

Thanks, Neil, but for the moment I am going to delete my protected Christmas music, and re-rip the CDs.

I'll take a look at your link. I've used VLC for DVDs before, but I did not know you could play music with it too. For what it's worth, I have Nero 7 on this machine and it will not play protected music either.

I have the same problem after re-installing the OS and have yet to find a way to get license. before I blew everything away, I move about 5000 songs to a USB drive... after the re-installation of the OS is when the problem started with no clue on how to get them to play... don't like IE of any version... tried to use it and the same results as you have...

James, If you open Windows Media Player > Organize > Options > is it checked for code protection? Neil.

Not checked... importing the songs from the USB is where the problem is... I ripped over 500 CD's and looks like I will have to do them all over (was trying to avoid that...)!!!

I reinstalled XP lately, and I can't even play the songs on that OS either. Weird.

EDIT: Well, I should have mentioned that I lost my usage rights after the reinstall. I guess I should have backed up the license - if that's possible.

I made sure that box was unchecked on Windows 7, and it is unchecked on XP too.

    I use Firefox 26 too.

Can you see "manage attachments" listed under "additional options" below the message box?

I can see it but it's greyed out as well... I can click on the colors and smiles and get a drop down window, as for the attachment.... nothing!

That doesn't sound right, try another browser or contact the administrator.

Any help in this MS How to Rip CD's in XP :http://windows.microsoft.com/en-NZ/windows-xp/help/windows-media-player/11/rip-a-cd

    Also:http://windows.microsoft.com/en-NZ/windows-xp/help/windows-media-player/11/rip-a-cd
    Also, consider this:

You just stop Windows Media Player from searching for the licenses. Go to Tools Menu -> Options -> Privacy tab ->

Uncheck the first three -> Display media info from the internet -> Update music files info from the internet -> Download usage rights

On the Player tab uncheck -> connect to the internet

Thanks for all your help and pointing me in right direction
stopped Windows Media Player from searching for the licenses.
Went on to web and downloaded migrate Licence and all is fine.
Perhaps I forgot to mention it was a new computer and you obviously need a licence for each computer!

Found this on Tom's Hardware site. The only stuff that seemed like your problem. Neil.
Have you got the W7 Codec Pack?

Are you saying that Media Player downloaded usage rights for protected music?

I would assume so, although I can't locate it. I have a program called Sherlock that is supposed to identify installed codecs, but I haven't located anything related to W7 Codec Pack. I do have something called the Xpack from Corel that I migrated over from XP.

    Resolved! :)

Out of curiosity, I opened Windows Media Center and tried to play protected music. I figured some sort of license message would open, and sure enough, it did. The message / process was a bit more involved than with Media Player, but Media Center managed to download usage rights with no problem. I should have documented my steps, but it was nothing more than following the prompts.

I closed Media Center, opened Media Player, and voila, the ripped CD music played as it should.
