Do Android phones come with a built-in antivirus product / protection?

This is an AT&T phone if I remember correctly.

Avast is another very good AV for Androids. They offer a "Track my phone" also in case of phone theft. Neil.

Since Android is owned by Google, I suppose one would have to download an antivirus app at Google Play?

I remember looking up apps for an Android smartphone a while back, and everything had to be downloaded through Google Play. What is the Store mentality all about anyway? A point of sale, and / or just an approved place to download apps and computer programs? I don't reckon one could download a smartphone application from someplace like File Hippo, or Softpedia.

It could be redirecting in the background and you not know it. Probably get a few bucks from whom ever you download from.

James, If you have a "Android" phone, Google own Android. All Apps suitable for Android must go through the "PlayStore ". Used to be called "Market ".
If you have the selection on your phone to Download from "Unknown Sources ", you may be able to install non-Google apps as long as they are compatible.
I usually select "Free" Apps from Google and pay for the ones that have special features. They are at mind bogling prices of $1.99 or $2.50! Neil.

Strange how they charge for these programs when you can download just about anything useful (for computers) on the web for free. Mobile computing is a different animal altogether from what I've seen.

I am using AVG which is of free version.

Also you can track/wipe/ring the phone from the http://www.avgmobilation.com/

More important , there is no lag/slowness observed in my phone after installing the antivirus.

So far so good for me. You may want to try.

I use Avast Mobile on my Nexus 7 (I know, not a phone)... pretty happy with it.

I don't think I would worry about Belarc Adviser for your cell phone. As I said earlier, Avast is lightweight and works extremely well and checks the Apps Updates when you approve install - unless you have agreed to Google doing Auto install. Neil.
