Hi Chris. Boy your Windows XP installation sure sounds like its pretty messed up.

I figured I could jump in and see if I could help get your Windows XP installation repaired.

Lets try this method to repair your system:

    1. Download the portable version of Windows Repair (All In One) from here, Windows Repair (All In One).
    2. Download the portable zip file to your desktop.
    3. Extract the contents of the zipped folder, and then double click on the programs .exe file to launch the program.
    4. After the program opens, click on the Step 2 tab and click the Do It button to have the program run Check Disk on the file system. Screenshot.
    5. After the computer finishes running Check Disk, start the program again and proceed to Step 3.
    6. Click on the Step 3 tab and click on the Do It button to allow the program to run the System File Checker to find and fix any corrupt Windows files. Screenshot.
    7. After SFC finishes, proceed to the Start Repairs tab.
    8. On the Start Repairs tab click on the Start button. Screenshot.
    9. Now ensure that ONLY the checkboxes in the program are checked as indicated below:

    Reset Registry Permissions
    Reset File Permissions
    Register System Files
    Repair WMI
    Repair Windows Firewall
    Repair MDAV/MS Jet
    Repair Hosts Files
    Remove Policies Set By Infections
    Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
    Remove Temp Files
    Repair Proxy Settings
    Repair Windows Updates
Set Windows Services to Default Startup
    Repair MSI (Windows Installer)

    10. Then when those checkboxes are selected, click on the checkbox that says Restart System when Finished.
    11. Now click on the Start button to start the repair process.
    12. The process could take some time so please be patient.
    13. After the repair process finishes, the computer will be rebooted.
    14. See if there is any difference after performing the above steps.

I have a feeling that you have some malware or some other shady programs that are installed on the machine that are conflicting and causing the problems with no Internet access and the borked uninstallation of SP3.

Thanks Evan, I was beginning to think that there might be some gremlins involved.
Follow Evan's advice and then a trip to Broni might be the answer. Neil

    Hi all,

Sorry for the tardy reply, but I've been trying to install XP on a new HDD. The problem seems to be that it's a SATA drive and I had to get SATA to IDE connector. Windows loads to the point where it says: No HDD detected. Windows cannot continue.

Yet in the BIOS it shows the drive, size, etc.

That's the understatement of the century!!!
Anyway, Evan, I DLed the program to my computer and will burn it and transfer it to the drive that's munged. I will follow all your instructions!

    UPDATE:
Now it won't boot at all. It gets to the Blue WinXP screen and hangs. And, when I try to do a Repair, it says there isn't enough room on the disk (13GB free). I don't know what to do now.

Well, I was finally able to do a repair install and got it up and running!!!

However, when I ran the tool in Evan's post, it said: Done: (a bunch of numbers), and Failed (the same number as Done)

    ?

Yikes. This is not looking good. Personally if I was in your shoes I would format the drive and start from scratch. The machine is just having too many issues to consider it a reliable system.

I know formatting the drive can be a pain but having all these errors with Windows XP may not be worth trying to fix.

You can try reinstalling Service Pack 3 and seeing if everything is working well enough after the installation is finished but if you continue to have issues then its best to bite the bullet and perform a clean installation.

    Update

It took three tries to finally get XP to repair. Everything worked! So, I installed SP2 and .... NO PROBLEMS!!! (not shouting "” just elated :D)

I did 4 scans of the computer before the SP3 debacle (SBS&D, MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware and Avast. Everything was clear. I did turn off ZoneAlarm and disabled Avast, but obviously it did no good.

I'm just going to build him a new computer and do a fresh, clean install of everything. That should be the end of all this brain damage once and for all.

Anyway, my heartfelt Thanks(!) to everyone for your help and support.
