I have a printer & scanner that require a processing speed of 486 or faster in Windows 98 & mine is 266. What are my options?

The 486 was the era before the Pentium since you have a 266 you exceed the minimum specs.

O.K. Then here's my problem. I have enough memory & I exceed the processing speed on these devices, but they both quit responding before completing the process. With my printer, I get it to print approximately the first inch of the page then it quits. For the scanner it quits responding either during the acquire phase or the preview phase. Any ideas?

    How much memory?

    How much free HD space?

What is running in memory? Ctrl alt del Tasks!

Did you download the latest drivers for these 2 devices?

Cleanup all temps both windows and internet.

    What else don't work correctly?

If the scanner is disconnected and the scanner software is not loaded does the printer print then?

    What brand/model printer and scanner?

WOW!! Where do I start. First I have tried closing all other programs via task manager & it doesn't help. Hard drive free space is 722 MB right now & I had 900 plus when I first tried to use it. Everything else seems to work fine. I tried unplugging the scanner, but the printer still quit responding. I have a Canon S200 Bubble Jet printer & a Canon CanoScan D646U. I have been writing to Canon customer service, but haven't gotten anywhere with them yet. I don't remember any other questions you had, so will send this & see what else I need to answer. Thanks!

OK. Drivers, I used the cd's that came with the devices. Yes I've cleaned out temp files, etc. I ran a defrag & diskscan.

Yeah thats right little work to it!

    Ok step by step.

    1. D/L latest driver for both devices.

    2. remove both devices and all software that came with them do not reboot at this time.

    3. Disconnect both devices then shut down and come back up without either device.

    4. Shutdown again reattach printer only!

    5. boot up install only the printer use the new drivers.

    6. only after printer is working do the same install proceedure with scanner.

If printer don't work without scanner get back to us. If it does tackle scanner.

Control panel-system-device manager look for Scanner and check to see if you have any redmarks or yellow excamition points. Remove these.

The printer can just be deleted from start settings printers if there is a scanner here delete it also.

Look carefully at add/remove to see if all software for these 2 devices are gone.

Don't forget to let windows come back up without the devices attached after removing the software.

    I tried

I followed your instructions & it didn't work. I followed the instructions at Canon & it didn't work. I got up to 13% complete instead of 3%, but it still looks like the same amount of printing. Now what? Do I repeat the process again or is there something else I should be looking at?

    No!

Now this is only the printer now correct? No scanner at all?

Do Ctr Alt Del get the tasks post them back to me so I can see if you have a program that would cause this.

Do you use Gator, Comet Cursor, Getright Webshots or Kazaa?

Do you use any instant messengers msn, yahoo, icq or irc.

What Virus scanner do you use and is it up to date and have you ran it recently?

Confirm above then do the below.

F8 while booting to get boot menu, select command prompt only.

    at c: prompt type

del c:\*.swp Then hit enter key
del c:\windows\*.swp then hit enter key
deltree c:\windows\temp\*.* then hit enter key
anwser yes to all prompts in any of these

    Reboot to full mode

Download install and run the following:

    Spyware and adware removal
    http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

    http://www.lavasoftusa.com/downloads.html

    Registry and System cleaners

    RegCleaner http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml

    EasyClean1.7 <http://gswi.com/downloads.htm>

Do not do Duplicate files in Easyclean.

Get these out of the way. If they don't fix the problem they will clear the slate and definately speed up and stabalize your computer.

    OK here we go

task manager - Explorer, Controlkids, Avgcc32, Loadqm, Launcher, Avgser9, Systray, Stimon, Tgcmd, Qttask.

Gator, Comet, Getright, Kazaa, Webshots - No (I did have webshots, but it was uninstalled a while ago).

I have Spybot. Is that good enough for the spyware?

    Virus scanner = AVG

    Instant Messengers - No

I need to know, is this is only the printer now correct? No scanner at all?

Did you do the F8 boot to dos stuff?? These are so important that they alone could fix the problem.

Spybot and Adaware togather are best.

Don't skimp here d/l and install and run Adaware. Make sure to select all options in adaware except floppy and CD!

Run Spybot but make sure to pick the online option and search for updates and install them all before running the program.

Do these reboot and then test printer and get back to us.

Special note: Just thought! This may be it. But still do the above also.

    Has this printer ever worked?

Ah haa this is probably it!!!!

Do you know how to get into CMOS (BIOS) by hitting the del (maybe F1) while booting?

If so get there change nothing else but find the printer or lpt port
it will have a setting for standard or BiDirectional or ecp or epp or ecp/epp. Chose the highest one of these in the order I gave ecp/epp being the best option. May have a number with it like ecp/epp1.7 or ecp/epp1.9 chose the highest.

If you can change this then when it boots F8 to safe mode and go to control panel system-device manager-Ports com and Lpt.
Select and remove any lptports here. They will be reinstalled corectly on next boot.

Also the printer cable should be IEEE this is usually written on the cable somewhere check for it!

    Here's an update

No the printer has never worked. I tried the DOS stuff. The first command said file not found. Second command said access denied. Third command ran a ton of stuff and I hit Y through them all. I've run Adaware, Spybot & Easyclean. I ran the regclean, but had no clue what to check so I backed out. I was waaaay lost in that one. What next? Do I go on to the last thing you suggested or retry the printer first or back up a step?

When you tell me that it said access denied it tells me you did not do it correctly.

These commands can only be ran from pure Dos.

You must reboot hit F8 every second while rebooting until you get a menu that has Safe mode and other commands. You should chose "Command prompt only" then run the commands.

    One more time

Here's what's happened. I did the F8 repeatedly & got to a c prompt without windows behind it. I was able to run the last two commands, but the first was still "file not found ". I got into BIOS by hitting F2. Went into Advanced, I/O Device Config, Parallel Port: Auto, Mode: EPP 1.9. I checked the device manager and there were no lpt ports. Unfortunately, it is past midnight & I have to get up at 6:00 to go to work, so I need to quit here & pick this up tomorrow night. It won't be until after 6:00 central time. :( If you can tell me where to go from here, I will pick it up at that point. Sorry for pooping out on you, but us accountants need our sleep so we can stay awake with all the excitement in our jobs! Thank you for all your help so far! :)

    I pooped first! Smile!

You done good. It is normal for the file not found in this case, you completed all correctly.

Important look closely at the printer cable, written on the cable in small print look for something that says something like, IEEE. If it has this you have the correct cable, if not and the below does not work then you may need a new cable. IEEE cables are not required for some printers, but is for most new lasers and ink jets and scanners.

BTW how does your scanner connect? Do you install the scanner then plug the printer to it? And you never confirmed that only the printer is connected now.

Confirm this to me. Did you change the printer to Epp 1.9 or was it already that. Also did you cycle thru the epp 1.9 setting so that you could see the other options? Did it have ECP/EPP 1.9? If it did, that is the one we need.

Next question: did you go to device manager
"before" you did the BIOS? It had to have an LPT port or it would not even print the few lines it does! Did you click the + here to open this up to see inside.

If you did not, then do this.

    1. Go back into BIOS find and highlight the EPP 1.9 the hit space or pageup or + or - to change it. There should be some help about what changes things at bottom of screen. Anyway get it to a combo of ECP/EPP 1.9 if possible. Save the setting when you exit this.

    2. Important when it starts to reboot continually hit F8 again (try not to let it go to full windows) when you get the startup menu this time pick "Safe Mode ".

the sreen will be grainy and it will say safe mode in all 4 corners of the screen.

    3. device manager "Ports Com and LPT" hit + look for and remove any and all LPT ports. Do nothing with the COM ports.

    4. Reboot and let it come up normally you should see windows say "New hardware found" printer port installing etc.

It may require a reboot to complete if so let it. Then try to print!

Let me know. I should be home by 6:30-7:00 pm.

    I'm back

OK so I lied. I checked into my email from here at work (lunch time:) ). Just some answers to your questions (I get to print out your list for reference here :D )

    1) I checked the printer cable & did not find IEEE, but there was a lot of little printing, so I'll examine it closer tonight. There was some Canon stuff, etc.

    2) Only the printer is connected now. Each device has it's own plug in on the computer.

    3) The LPT port was in the device manager before I did the BIOS, but not there afterwards. I didn't remove it before BIOS, though so I assume I need to do the safe mode thing in DOS.

    4) I changed the printer to EPP 1.9 from BiDirectional. The other choices were Standard, BiDirectional , ECP, then two different EPP's I think one was like 1.0 & the other was the EPP 1.9. (I wish I had my cheat sheet that I wrote the notes on).

By the way, I tried booting up my computer this AM & got a java object not found error which doesn't seem to affect anything (just annoying). When I click OK it goes away & I can move around fine. Plus Internet Explorer has been making me retry for an internet connection each time I try to get onto the internet. When I click retry it lets me in. Do I need to reset something that was changed maybe with the spybot & stuff?

I'll check in tonight!! Thanks Mike!

    Pat
