    PS: I dont have any plans that will call for a compiler - cobol was the last compiler i used a long
    time ago when i had to work for a living... :)

    It's necessary if you use software coded with .NET Framework, else completely unnecessary. The only software I have ever used that's dependent upon .NET is TurboTax.
