    Hi

Do not know what to do about this problem. It has happened before but then went away. Now it has happened every day for the last four days, when I am online. The following appears in blue screen.

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down.

    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen
    appears again follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for
any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software.
Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to
use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to
select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

    Technical information:

    ***STOP 0x000000D1 (0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000. 0x00000000)

    Beginning dump of physical memory
    Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance

I haven't a clue as to what I can or should do. Really need your help. Thanks in advance.

Hi Ann, To try and help - had anything been added to your comp in the previous week? Software, Hardware updates?

If nothing has happened when you Start the comp tap F8 and choose Last known good configuration to start and see if that helps.Neil.

I made no changes at all to computer. I am worried about what this means. Is the HD going bad? When I start system again, it does boot into Windows as always, at least up until now.

Have you started with F8 and last good configuration? Neil.

Sorry, but what is FB? I do not have Restore enabled. I do not have configurations available. I do, however, have TI Images.

That was F8 (eight) When you start the comp, tap F8 when you hear the Post (beep) and it enters the Screen where Safe Mode and other options are available.
Choose > Last Known Good Configuration and see if that helps.

Have you had a look in Device Manager to see if there are any Exclamation marks? It may be necessary to renew a Driver. Neil.

retiredlearner, Glad to report that there are no exclamation marks in Device Manager and I was able to go to the Last Configuration Screen. This booted Windows same as it always does when I boot up. Should something be different?

What does the message n BSOD mean?

Are you still getting the message after booting to last good config?
As I said, you may need to Update Driver/s. Neil.

When you get these puppies, there is a file identified with it. Can you tell me what the file name is?

elcajongunsfan - I posted everything that I got on Blue Screen. Don't know what file you are referring to but I do not see any file as such in the message.

jpChris - I meant what does the Blue Screen of Death message in my case mean?

retiredlearner - Should I always boot up from Last Good Configuration from now on?

Yesterday I did not use my computer to go online and I worked all day backing up everything I had on my HD. Used computer to work on various things and nothing happened BUT - I saw that my Avast needed updating to version 9.x.x. which I remember I had already done. I updated it and got stuck in limbo where avast asks me to reboot computer to finish installation of Avast, but it never finishes. It is stuck in You must reboot mode.

I haven't installed the November Windows updates yet because of the problems, but I did the Avast program update as a reflex action.

Do I need to blow torch my computer? Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Hi Ann,

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is usually generated when a driver or part of Windows attempts to access pageable memory using the IRQL kernel process that is invalid.

    1) Bad hardware drivers.
    2) Bad memory or mismatched memory.
    3) Corrupt or bad Virtual Memory page file.

STOP 0x000000D1: This error usually indicates a bad device driver.

Also, you may be interested to know that Avast 9 (2014) is causing a lot of problems (even some BSOD's). I suggest you go to the Avast site http://www.avast.com/en-us/uninstall-utility , download avastclear.exe and completely uninstall V.9.

Then go to: http://www.oldapps.com/avast_antivirus.php and scroll down to v.8.0.1489.

Download that version, install it and see if your BSOD disappears.

Ann: Here's an example by file name

see the filename on the third line? That is what I am asking about

but to make this short, if the filename is a system file you are looking at ram failure

.....and doing all kinds of restores and rollbacks might introduce more problems

Ann, sorry I couldn't get to answer your question but I see you've been getting a lot of help anyway.
I wanted to know if Booting from F8 > Last Known Good Configuration has cured your problem.
It's normally only necessary to use that Boot sequence once and if the problem is fixed, starting and shut down will be back to normal.
I'm wondering as jpChris noted in his Post that Avast have been having a multitude of problems with their Version 9 in all Windows OS's and whether an uninstall might be the answer.
Please Download the previous Version of Avast BEFORE you uninstall Version 9!!!
Save it to Desktop or your Download Folder first.
Get the uninstall software from Avast to clean out V9 stuff.
When I uninstall an Anti -Virus software, I always ensure I have a FRESH copy to install because I disconnect from my Broadband while carrying out this work.
Once the new AV is installed - I then connect to the Internet again so that the latest updates for it can be installed.
The problem still may be Driver/s as previously noted, but do the Avast thing first and see if the problem BSOD recurs.
Please do ONE thing at a time or we'll be chasing our tail. Neil.

For what it's worth, I am running the latest version of Avast on XP with no issues yet.

    @ Neil,

So, you went to the Avast Forums and saw all the issues, eh? I really hope Ann reads your post.

    @ James,

It seems to be hit or miss ( a lot of misses) with the latest Avast. I'm really glad you're not having any issues.

retiredlearner and jpCris - Sorry for going AWOL, but I was down and out with a terrible cold and couldn’t get my head around this until I felt better. Still not normal, but improving.

Since I Booted from Last Known Good Configuration I have not had another BSOD. I hope that this has taken care of it.

Now the biggie - I have never updated drivers and don’t know how you tell which driver needs updating and where to get the updates from. I have heard horror stories about getting drivers from Windows so I would appreciate a step-by-step on how to update drivers. If BSOD message is pointing to device driver as the culprit, it seems this should be the next step, but I need help for this.

Re Avast 9 - I went to the trouble of uninstalling it and reinstalling it one more time. This time everything is working, although I don’t care much for the Interface. I did this before coming back here and reading your comments about going back to Avast 8. I will keep this option in mind if BSOD comes back. I do notice that computer has slowed down with Avast 9 and I do not like the Interface at all so going back to Avast 8 might be the way to go with or without BSODs.

Thank you so much for your help.

Ann, the first place to start looking for drivers is the e-Machine web site. (I read your system specs)

Click on Drivers & Downloads and follow the prompts. There is also a hardware vendor detection utility that you can download here. I presume this utility will scan your system and show you what drivers need to be updated.

Hope you get over your cold OK. :)

Ann, sorry to hear you got 'bugged'. Hope you're getting your strength back.

If you say your comp is working OK and no more BSOD, I would not do anything further at this point in time. (If it ain't broke - don't fix it).

If you get a repeat problem in the future - call for help and I'm sure someone will walk you through the process. ;) Neil.

ps. Have you tried M S E (Microsoft Security Essentials) for your AV? It is definitely not a Resource hog as some other AV's are.

I will close this for now, but if problems come up again, I'll be back.
I will also look into MSE and check it out. Thank you so much for your help.

    Happy Thanksgiving!
