I am using Win XP Professional (Not SP1)

The taskbar sometimes often cease responding for a moments (about 10 sec or so) when I click it, but the computer is still runnning as I could use alt-tab to switch to other applications.

I am using a Compaq desktop with a nVidia card, I have upgraded the driver to the latest official lease but still can't solve the problem.

    Could anybody please help?

Possibly a programme is hogging resources.
Through the startmenu/Programmes go to the startup folder and remove all programmes that you don't need to start up with windows. This folder on my PC is empty, and I try to keep it that way.
When the slowdown happens right click on the taskbar and select task manager, click on the processes tab and look fo a task/programme that is using probably 99% of the system resourced when the slowdown ocurres. That will be the culprit. You will need to investigate how important it is, and if it can be updated, uninstalled, reinstalled or disabled etc.

I have a similar problem, and I am also using a nVidia card. nVidia GeForce 2 MX 400, to be precise.

When the freeze occurs, the system resource percentages are normal. The highest would be the System Idle Process.

Although there are other methods to run Task Manager, perhaps this bit of information might help: During the freeze, right-clicking on the taskbar doesn't do anything; if you just keep on right-clicking, after 15-30secs when the freeze is over, the menus come out all at once very Very VERY quickly.

    Any ideas?

Do good cleanups of all Temps both internet and windows temps. In win2k & XP do this using Accesscories-system tools-Disk Cleanup. Select everything.

Then download install and run the Spy/Aware cleaners below configure them to do full deep scans.

Both of you post back the results of this. Especially if it does not fix the problem.

But odds are 95% that it will fix it.

I found that my system's problem was due to a faulty HP laser printer driver which will use 100% of system resources. The HP mentioned that they know about the problem, but the updated driver couldn't be downloaded but need to be obtained through HP's sales person (not a responsible way to distribute remedy to problem they created!)

    Thx for your advice!
