I want to uninstall MSE, at least for the time being so that I can try out a different anti-virus program (ESET NOD32 trial) and not have a conflict.
I uninstalled MSE through the control panel and restarted the computer but when I went to download NOD32, it still gave me the message box that it detected Microsoft Security Essentials and suggested that I uninstall it.

I thought I did, but I guess it isn't completely uninstalled. What can I do to completely uninstall MSE?

I've tried doing those things before but I don't know how use that removal tool.

I just went ahead and installed NOD32 anyway. I figured even if there may be a trace of MSE left somewhere, it is still uninstalled for the most part anyway.

Basically you just run the Microsoft Fixit and follow the instructions - it's an automated process.

I guess there may still be reference to MSE in the Registry - unlikely to be an issue as NOD32 installed anyway.

Is it still listed in the Control Panel\Programs and Features. If so: Orb\Run\regedit\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall. You will have to go through the Uninstall list including the Braced Keys for example {A12345678-1234}. I know it's tedious. I use that method and it works. The search method Orb\Run\regedit\Edit\Find\Type what you want search for. When finds a Key delete it. Go back to Edit and click on Find Next. REMEMBER BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY FIRST!
