    system = gateway fx 6710-01
graphics card = AIT Radeon HD 4800

Graphics card is going bad. Need to replace it but because of the position
of the sound card slot, the replacement card must be a low-profile card
(including any heat sinks height). Replacement does not need to an
ATI card, any decent card will do.

From checking the web, its hard to tell if the heat sink is higher than
the front panel. This high-height would press against the back of
    the sound card.

Can anyone suggest a low height card?

    thanks,

Here is good video card that I would recommend, MSI R6570-MD1G/LP Radeon HD 6570 1GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card.

If you are going to be playing high end games and want one of the best low profile video cards then you can get this one instead, PowerColor AX7750 1GBD5-HLEV2 Radeon HD 7750 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Low Profile Ready LP V2 Video Card(UEFI READY).

Either card will be fine but it depends on how much money you want to spend.

Think I'll give the powercolor a shot.
I'm covered with my power supply.
One question: Is the pci express 3.0 compatible with pci express 2.0
system (pretty sure it is but don't know the impact)?

    Thanks for the help, Evan

Yes, they are forwards and backwards compatible. It is not likely you will notice any impact - especially if the new card has more horsepower (GPU speed and on-board RAM) than the old.

As for space, can you move the sound card to a lower slot?

sound card is PCI-E 1 so I would have to get a PCI only card.

I purchased the PowerColor AX7750. We'll see what happens.

Will post back end results after i get the card.....

    thanks again for the assist,

The fact it is PCIe does not mean it cannot be moved. It depends on the motherboard. I note many motherboards have a PCIe slot at or near the bottom (in a tower).

I have this Gigabyte board and it has a PCIe slot at the bottom, then moving up, a PCI slot, then another PCIe.

That said, it does appear your Gateway/Acer board has only PCI slots on the lower end. But, it also has integrated audio. So do you really need a sound card? Not to mention, if your avatar image is a good representation of your age, then I note folks - especially men - in "our" age brackets don't have the discerning ear we did when we were in our late-teens and early 20s. Not to mention, even the best computer speakers could hardly be called audiophile quality.

Hopefully, with the card you selected, it will be a moot (not mute ;)) point.

    Bill,

    Now that's funny!

Actually my ears are better than my eyes. With a 5.1 speaker system i can
    still determine individual speakers.

    thanks,

Determining the direction the sound is coming from is one thing. But I am talking about fidelity and frequency response. Your motherboard supports 5.1 audio. And being digital, I am just saying folks our age are not likely to tell the difference between a sound card and integrated audio when using the same set of speakers - especially computer speakers where the majority of the electronics, including all the amplification, are in the speakers (subwoofer) anyway.

    Just something to think about.

got the card, fit like a glove!
Didn't have to move anything and doubled the video memory.

I like my speakers, seems to just sound better to me.

thanks for all the help, guys.

I was not suggesting replacing your speakers. Do you mean they sound better with the sound card vs the integrated? Certainly possible and since the new card fits without moving it, I sure would not pull it.

Thanks for letting us know. Make sure to install the latest AMD Video Driver for the card to ensure that you get the best performance.
