Have been running 8 and using free software to put back the start button and bypass the tiled startup screen - all working fine and doing what I want.
Decided to upgrade to 8.1 - all seemed to go OK until I restarted and found that along with a number of other programs on my system, my anti virus software (avast) was completely removed!
Fortunately I had cloned my C drive which is on an SSD to another SSD so was able to return to my old setup.
Cannot see what advantages 8.1 will give me other than Microsoft are apparently forcing us to go to 8.1 within the next 2 years
    Regards

Check the 3rd party software Websites for their versions that work with Windows 8.1.

Sounds like people should wait a few weeks (for 3rd party applications to catch up) before doing the 8.1 upgrade?

That is normal. I updated from win 8.1 preview Evaluation Build 9431 to Win 8.1 Pro. Before I preformed the update I received a message that certain apps will be removed and will have to be reinstalled.

I agree - 8.1 update requested uninstall of Vipre Internet Security before it would proceed - fairly relaxed about that as Windows Defender presumably took over. Vipre installed without issue after update.
