My wife has an Acer laptop currently running Windows XP. I know the laptop will run Windows 7. My question is will Windows 7 overwrite the XP install files (the laptop has a hidden partition with the XP install files on it) already on the laptop?

Not if you don't want it to. When it prompts you for the partition on where you want it to install Windows 7, select the C: partition where XP is already installed.

If you make a Custom Install of Windows 7 you choose which partition to install 7 on - the hidden partition with the XP installation files will remain, but I very much doubt that you could invoke it to reinstall XP.

Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7

How to Do a Custom Installation of Windows 7

Personally I would not rely on Windows Easy Transfer and would suggest you back up your data files manually before proceeding.

No doubt you have run the Windows Upgrade Advisor as you say the laptop will run Windows 7, but have you checked to see if the motherboard drivers for 7 are available at the manufacturer's web site?

    Thank you for the reply...

PeteC, shouldn't I still be able to press the left Alt, and the F10 keys when the Acer logo appears on the to reinstall Windows XP or is Windows 7 going to disable it?

Sorry for the late reply, but what it is I'm worried about losing is the hidden partition PQSERVICE which is needed for the eRecovery Management to work if it's decide to go back to XP Home.

I do have the recovery disks for the laptop, but does anyone know if those disks will recreate the hidden partition with the install files??

The recovery disks should be exactly what is on the "D" partition which is your XP. If you should decide to go back, you could format "C" then use the recovery disks.

I use my HP recovery discs. What recovery discs do is restore the laptop to Factory condition.

    Sorry for the late reply...

What decided to do is shrink the C drive and create a second partition and install Windows 7 on it. That will hopefully not create any problems because the hidden partition won't be touched.

It will also let my get familiar with Win7 while still using XP...

    Thanks for the help...
