I have a Canopus Raptor video capture card in my PC. When I install the drivers for it, I lose the posibility of shutting down to hybernation. I know that this happens when you install drivers not verified by Microsoft because they want to avoid restore problems when you have drivers/hardware they haven't checked. However I am willing to run the risk in order to see if my card/driver really will create restore problems as I miss my hibernation option. Is there anyway to overrule this? Possibly by cheating the system into beliving that this driver is signed by Microsoft? Updating is not an option as service for the product is discontinued.

I don't believe that the problems that occur with power management are due to Microsoft's effort to prevent people from using non-WHQL drivers. The problem occurs when certain drivers fail to terminate properly when entering the power-saving state.

Many, if not most, manufacturer's drivers will still let hibernation occur. You just need to try it. Sometimes older drivers actually work better than newer ones.

My computer has 3 or 4 non-MS drivers (this is shothand---most WHQL drivers actually come from the manufacturer's. MS is not in the driver business overall) and works fine now, but it took some searching to find drivers that worked properly.

    Hi Abraxas,
I would believe it was a driver problem if I was allowed to go into hibernation, and it then didn't work. However, the indication is that the standby/hibernation on the shutdown menu gets greyed out as soon at the drivers are installed. That indicates to me that it is XP that decides not to let me hibernate. The driver hasn't had a chance to try yet. I have also read somewhere, but I can't remember where, that is was a Microsoft action, but that may of course not be correct.
I have tried all older drivers and all Canopus help sites. There will be no further updates to the drivers as the product is discontinued.
    Thanks for helping,
    Per

I haven't seen that happen, Per . Just a thought--did you check the power options in the Control Panel to see if something got unchecked?
