trying to apply changed settings in config.sys but when I hit save option it comes up "general error while accessing file a:\config sys "

I also tried using help option and it wouldn't work, a error message saying "make sure that helpfile Edit.HLP is in same director and hasn't been modified. "

please can someone help me out

You first posted in the Vista forum .....

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/windows-vista/106246-corrupt-driver-error-message-boot.html
You are now posting in the XP forum - Windows XP sys.config error

It seems to me that these 2 threads are related, but it would help if you would confirm which OS you are trying to load - Vista or XP ?? Or are you posting about 2 separate computers?

Clear this up and we may be in a far better position to help you.

The last Windows version to use CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files was Windows Me, which was released some 13 years ago. (And it only used them to parse environment variables).

I'm sorry, its XP that I have, my mind is everywhere because I just lost my father and I have pictures saved on there that I cant get to of him. But my OS is XP. I apologize for the confusion.

I know Windows XP doesn't use CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT. They are there simply to provide backward compatibility with legacy applications as said above, and that you can get to it through I cannot get to where I need to do this

To set environmental variables, Right-Click My Computer >
    Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables > System Variables/New
(or Edit, as applicable). You can also add the appropriate line(s) to
    C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt and/or C:\Windows\System32\Config.nt.
To run programs on login, create a shortcut to the desired application
and place it in the pertinent Startup folder(s).

is there a way to bypass it or a command that will lead to the same place?

To Create, Edit and/or Delete environment variables in Windows XP, click the Start button, right-click My Computer and select Properties, click the Advanced tab, then click the Environment Variables button.

Which environment variable are you trying to add, edit or delete?

My computer will not boot to the screen where the start button shows :/ when I power it up, it says operating system not found. Here is what occurred step by step. maybe it will better explain the problem.

    Boot Manager:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware of software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1.Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.
2.Choose your language settings, and then click "Next ".
    3.Click "Repair your computer. "

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

    Status: 0xc000000f

Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

Now when I put in the Windows Disc, it will make it as far as the screen that says

Confirmation of restore procedure. all data in hard drive C will be lost.
Are you sure you wish to proceed? If yes press y, if no press n.

Following this, I press Y and after a several second pause, this error comes up

"Internal Stack Overflow caused session to halt. Change STACK setting in CONFIG.SYS "

    From there I go to A:\ "edit config.sys "

I then change the STACKS as stated to do but when I go to File>Save As>Enter I get this as a response

General Error while assessing file A:\config.sys

I thank you for your help so far in solving this and I hope its something that can be fixed :/

You can't edit a file on the Windows XP CD/DVD.

If you're trying to boot from a version of MS-DOS on a floppy diskette in drive A:, more than likely it will not be able to read the hard drive containing your Windows XP because it's way to old.

Can you try doing a Slave run?
Take the Hard Drive out of that comp and put it as a Slave drive in another computer and see if you can access your pictures from there.
It's what I would try. Neil.
