My PC is running Windows 7 64bit.

When I have finished using my machine I usually send it to sleep.
It does this OK, but very often wakes up again after about 5 seconds.
I sometimes have to do this a couple of times before it finally stays asleep.
Can anyone suggest what might be causing this behaviour.

    Thanks,
    Geoff

Run this from a command prompt powercfg -lastwake>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$ and post the result.

IMO, going back to Windows 3.11, Windows sleep modes have never consistently worked just right. But it is not always Windows fault. There are many "Wake on..." options provided in the BIOS Setup Menu that cause Windows and the computer to wake upon some "event ". These include:

    Wake on Keyboard
    Wake on Mouse
    Wake on LAN
Wake on LAN is typically disabled by default. But Wake on Keyboard and Mouse allow you to press a key, wiggle the mouse or press a mouse button. You need to ensure Wake on LAN is not enabled.

Arie's command will tell you what last woke the computer. If it says USB, it could be your mouse or keyboard. What I have seen many times is simple vibrations from heavy footfalls, jet engines (retired USAF), loud music with heavy bass, bumping the table, etc. are picked up by the mouse, which then signals the computer to wake up. Remembering to put the mouse belly up before walking away can prevent that sort of problem (or perhaps, so can changing the mouse's sensitivity settings).

Much less common, but still a possibility is a sticky power button on the case front. Depending on how the power button is setup in the BIOS Setup Menu, it too can be used to signal the computer to wake.

I would also scan for malware - just to be sure the system is clean.

Thanks for all your comments, but I found this solution on another forum and it has worked.
I have a Realtek network adapter, it that's relevant,
I went into Properties and disabled "Wake on Magic Packet" and "Wake on Pattern Match "

    No more problems.
