Hi all, I recently bought a new HP laptop and it came with Windows 8. The strangest thing is happening with the Wifi connectivity. When I connect at the office, I am getting about .68MBS internet down and 3MBS up (should be more like 10MBS down, 3 MBS up). When I connect to the home network I am getting 30MBS down and 7 MBS up (normal).

This morning I did a power cycle on the wireless router and speeds improved. But now at noon we're back to extremely slow internet speeds.

I've run all updates for windows, I've checked the firmware on the router and it is the latest version... Anyone have any suggestions on where I should start looking?

    Thanks in advance.

I should say that all the other laptops and wireless devices (in the office) are getting normal speeds--but they are all Windows 7. That's why I think it is Windows 8 related.

I am sure that when you are at the office, there are several people fighting for the bandwidth. At home, it is only you and maybe somebody else if you have another PC connected.

The speed in your office may not be the same speed that you have at home also.

Thanks, Mr. Bill. I don't think that's the issue. I can get 10MBS on all the computers when I'm running the speedtest at the same time. The problem seems to be limited to this one new laptop. I also tried it late Friday night when I was the only person on the work wireless and had the same result.

Do you know for a fact that you don't have a bunch of programs running in the background trying to get to the internet?

The 10MBS isn't really going to the computers. That is what is hitting the modem/router.

Sure it is, IF that's what the subscribed bandwidth is. The connection from the router to computer is much more than 10 mb/sec. Speed test sites measure the rate from the server to the computer.

On the windows 8 laptop I would try disabling any firewalls and Internet security programs and test the download rate again. And set Windows update to manual because it may have been downloading ton of stuff even while at the office.

Thanks guys. I ran all the updates at my home internet on Friday because I thought that could have been the problem too. The problems were before I installed the security/firewall programs -- in fact, that is what I was downloading when I noticed the speed problems.

And we're back up to 10mbs now for some reason... Very odd.

That explains it then. Website speed tests work by downloading a small file and uploading a small file that has been downloaded. It appears that the bandwidth was being consumed by the earlier downloads (security stuff download in progress).

If all remains well, then please mark this thread as resolved.
