    Reply to Mflynn and Mopar

Thanks to you both for your new ideas. -- Am late getting back to this due to busy times this Holiday -- is reason have not replied since Dec 9.

    I did the flush/dns

Also, I used a program called PurgeIE/ 5.01. It cleans out your index.dat and other stray files that the IE delete cookies, etc. does not find. This program did find a number of corrupted files. It was recommended by Kim Komando.

I did find the IE firewall and it was not enabled. (thanks Mohar)

Alas, I still cannot log on unless NPF is disabled.

    I will try the un-install & re-install suggestion.

I don't have the CD since I purchased Norton Firewall on-line and downloaded it.

Won't it work to re-install via the download icon??

It'll work. Just be sure to make a note of your registration details prior to uninstalling.

Get rid of Norton. Their products are no better than anything else, and in my experience cause too many strange and hard-to-fix problems.

I have not yet had time to un-install Norton Firewall -- but another idea surfaced form another BBS.

    The suggestion is:

Instead of clicking the left mouse button to proceed to the next secure page -- click the RIGHT mouse button and choose open.

I did try this suggestion and below are the steps I took re: a jscript run time error.

    =============

Right click on the "log in" button
    Choose open in new window
    "A run-time error has occurred "
"do you wish to debug "
    Line 0
"document.frmMyAccount is null or not an object "
    click "YES "
get box titled "Just in time debugging "
Do You want to de-bug using the selected de-bugger?
    YES
Next box titled: "Step into Remote procedure call "
    Process:
    [2456] C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
choose the program you want to debug:
I highlighted "script" And clicked OK
Next box titled: "Microsoft visual studio de-bugger "
Message: first is icon yellow triangle with black exclamation point inside triangle -
Microsoft Jscript runtime error: 'document.frmMyAccount is null or not an object'
    Click on "break" button
Do not understand instructions on what to do next - when I click continue the system just goes back to the same runtime error

I am out of my league -- all the "help" solutions require programming knowledge.

Thanks to Brett and MFlynn and all others who have been so much help - and who have been so very patient :)

    Ok Judy!

Sorry late getting back to you. But did get your PM yesterday!

It is time to get drastic. Print this message so that you can refer to it, to do these things, and do them in the order presented. This will take a couple of hours though this message will make it look harder and more complex than it is. Just do it a step at a time.

Everything we will do will improve the computers performance and stability even if it still does not fix this problem. This is what I call the shotgun approach since neither I nor anyone else actually know exactly what your problem is, I am going to do everything to clean and correct the system.

Before we begin I need a little info.

    1. Are you on broadband(cable or DSL)?
    2. Have you installed XP service pack SP1?
    3. Do you have any other problems intermittent and seemingly unrelated to this that you have not mentioned?

I need to see your startups so download StarupList below. Unzip and run it. It will place startups in a WordPad file. Copy them and paste back in a post.

    http://www.3feetunder.com/krick/startup/list.html

Then D/L and install Startup control panel. This gives simple and full control of what starts at boot up. After install there will be a Startup icon in control panel. We will use this later.

    http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

Do the above first and get the info back to me then continue below.

    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sageset:1
It will present a menu select all except compress, then

    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sagerun:1

    Run PurgeIE again.

Download install and run each of the below.

    Spyware and Adware removal

    SpyBot http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
Run this twice delete all it finds

    AdAware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/downloads.html
Run this once in setup select all options except floppy a: delete all it finds

    BHO Demon http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm
This program runs stand alone no install is required post me the items it finds

    Registry and System cleaners

    RegCleaner http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml
Look in first 2 cols for programs you thought you uninstalled or removed, these are the dregs left by the uninstaller. Also tag and remove any that you are POSITIVE are not supposed to be on your computer. After removing these go to the top Tools-Registry Cleanup-Do them all. Delete all it finds.

    EasyClean1.7 http://gswi.com/downloads.htm
Run only unnecessary files and registry clean delete all it finds

    RegScrubXP http://home.carolina.rr.com/lexunfreeware/RegScrubXPSetup_3.2.exe
    NOTE: W2K and XP only
Select RegScrub finds problems and remove all it finds.

    http://www.webattack.com/get/xpantispy.shtml
Select everything except these 4 items.
    Don’t show balloon tips
    Enable fast shutdown
    Increase MaxConnectionsperServer to 10
    Disable Task Scheduler service

After the first reboot after you run XPAntiSpy go back to XpAntiSpy and uncheck the clear Pagefile at shutdown, as we only want to clear it once.

This computer should be clean lean and mean now. You should see definite increase in Performance.

Because of the cleaning a defrag is in order so do that.

You can test for the problem now but we still will need to deal with the startups and Win Updates and Service packs. Do not do these yet please. We need to do some prep first. After you send the info at the beginning of this message i will get back to you.

Is this enough to keep you busy and out of trouble for a while? Smile!

    Mike

I agree with Brett. I thought you had done this. You should uninstall and retest for the problem. If the problem is gone with no Firewall then you will know exactly the culprit!

If you then reinstall norton and the problem comes back then even more proof.

Then it will be time to change firewalls.

    RE: Uninstall of Norton

    Hello again Brett and MFlynn,

    I did un-install and re-install Norton.

I did try again to access the secure log-in page with Norton disabled and with Norton not disabled.

NOW -- it turns out that I cannot log in either way

AND -- this has now become rather urgent a problem because I cannot now log into important pages.

Shall I try your suggestions now, MFlynn ??

Thanks so much for your help and reply

    Hi Judy

If you have not done the proccedure in my message of

    26th January 2003 11:22

yes you should do it now.

These are the steps to do a deep cleaning. These things will help with performance and stability even if the do not correct this problem.

If you do them and it still does not fix the problem then the system is clean and ready for a full uninstall and reinstall of IE.

By removing Norton do you mean you removed it all including the Virus scanner? If so we need to additional cleaning here so let me know.

Hi Mike, thanks for your quick reply.

    I did NOT un-install Norton Anti-Virus program.

Below are the answers to the first part of your clean-up suggestions:

    1. Are you on broadband(cable or DSL)?
*** I use both "“ now I am using roadrunner cable
    2. Have you installed XP service pack SP1?
    *** Yes, Version 5.1 service pack 1
    3. Do you have any other problems intermittent and seemingly unrelated to this that you have not mentioned?
** Only J script runtime errors, that I can think of

I need to see your startups so download StarupList below. Unzip and run it. It will place startups in a WordPad file. Copy them and paste back in a post.

http://www.3feetunder.com/krick/startup/list.html -- on this page there was no download icon "“ only a list of possible programs that are required or not required in the startup of a computer.
*** I have cleaned up my startup as well as I can using the MSCONFIG program. Only startups I cannot figure out are HKLM -- ccapp, cc RegVfy ( could this be Purge IE?) , and dumprep ( I did choose none on -- can’t remember now, but choosing "none" for dumprep was recommended somewhere )

Then D/L and install Startup control panel. This gives simple and full control of what starts at boot up. After install there will be a Startup icon in control panel. We will use this later.

    http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml --
**** I did install this and don’t know what to do next "“ I still can’t find the way to copy and paste what items I have in my start-up list

    Thanks, Judy

    OK Judy

First I apoligize for sending you the wrong link to startup list so here is correct one

    http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/startuplist.zip

I would like to see this list.

Part of your problem may be Java (evidenced by your script errors)so we will deal with that also after I see the startups.

    Quote

    2. Have you installed XP service pack SP1?
    *** Yes, Version 5.1 service pack 1

    Unquote

I don't undestand, do you mean IE sp1. The XP SP1 is SP1 so I don't know where the 5.1 came from?

If you installed the Startup Control Panel then you have a new Icon in the Windows Controls panel called Startup. Dbl click and it will allow you to uncheck startups or remove or move.

Did you do the others BHODemon, RegCleaner etc.

I am at my office now so will be back to finish after you answer the above.

I do have Windows XP Service Pack 1 -- sorry I did give you the IE version.

I did not do the BHO demon, Reg cleaner, etc. because I thought it was down on your list to be done after the first part ....

Since I cannot figure out which section of the startup list from Spyware to use, I will send you the entire list -- it is long, but looks like it will give you more maybe needed info.

I will send it to your private e-mail, however.

    Thanks again, Judy

    OK Judy

No do the steps as I outlined.

I do not need the list from Spybot or awaware. Only the StartupList.

In Sybot and Adaware delete "ALL" they find. Run Spybot first and twice and only twice. Leave anything in Spybot after the second run. Run adaware only once!
