    DEll Inspiron 1530. HD (C:) = 34.7 GB free of 61.8 GB
    Recovery (D:) 38.7 free of 9.9 GB
Get message flashing up stating low space on recovery ( D:)
Recently installed WINDOWS 7 IN PLACE OF Windows Vista.
Boot up shows choice of Windows 7 or Vista, is Vista still installed ? how do we uninstall it.
Need to instal Virus protection, concerned about disk space.
Can we uninstal files on Recovery D:?

38.7 what? You seem to have left it out. I don't expect it is 38.7GB or 38.7%.
    38.7 Megabytes?

Look at the files on the D: drive. Anything you recognise? Sort by date, does it seem like a back up of your system recently? Can you delete anything you know are not needed?

I expect you have a "dual boot ". You could try booting to Vista and see if it is "still there" (just see if it works). If so, then yes, it is still there. When installing, you chose to install Win 7 in tandem to Vista. Sorry, but I wouldn't give you advice. (I hate that situation, and have avoided it since I first encountered it. I only run dual boot operating systems on different hard disk drives.)

Hi Mattman, Recovery D: should now read 50.9 MB free of 9.99 GB.
We can boot from Windows Vista so it is 'dual boot' this was not the intention.
Is it best we reinstal Windows 7, ON IT'S OWN.
There is not much on the Recovery disk (D:) that can be now be uninstalled.
Do we need anything on Recovert D:, it seems a waste of disk space according to the owner?

If I am reading this right, what should be on D was probably the recovery for Vista when the PC was new.

I would just put the Win 7 disc in and delete the partition, format, and install it on the PC.

For an AV, I like many others use MSE and am very happy with it.

Hi Mr Bill, I think you are right, the Recovery (D:) seems to be for the original Vista installation.owner often wondered what it was for, I will advise deleting the partition , formatting (D:) and using the complete HD without partition,
    Will let you know results.

Lots of PC manufactures are doing it that way for a while. They don't send you a CD/DVD. You make your own when you turn on the PC it will prompt you till you do it. That "D" partition is usually what the "C" looked like before anything else was installed on it. Right out of the box, they both look exactly alike.

That dogs name is lucky. If you know the whole story. LOL

Back to the topic at hand, have a look here: Error: Low Disk Space. You are running out of disk space on Recovery (D:) (Windows Vista)

You can also disable this by removing the drive letter from your recovery partition (using diskmgmt.msc).

The above is if you would want to retain the original recovery partition. If the owner has a Windows 7 upgrade license, make sure that he has made a Vista recovery DVD, so he would be able to reinstall Windows 7 and 'prove' his eligibility for the upgrade with the Vista DVD.

For Dell Inspiron see: How do I create backup discs with Dell DataSafe Local Backup 2.0?

The previous page was not completed (Dog put paw on laptop during thunderstorm trying to get on my lap).
Previous cont'd. The owner chose option 2 to instal windows 7, that's the CUSTOM OPTION that uninstalls all previous files.
So where did he go wrong, his original OS was Vista .this became a second boot option.probably when installing the first Windows 7, his reason for trying to instal second Windows 7 was to try to eliminate Vista as a second boot.
