    Your question isn't very clear.

Do you want to use Vista to access millions of FTP sites.... Or do you want people to be able to access your Vista machine that is acting as an FTP server?

Sorry I was not more detailed.

I have an Alesis HD24 hard drive multitrack recorder.

There are a few firmware upgrades available for my recorder that fix some software problems that were inherent in this machine..

But they are in zip files..I found an unzipper to unzip the files.

However, in order to transfer them from my desktop to the recorder so they can install I have to do it via FTP...

I have a crossover INET cable that fits into the machine/desktop to do this but I have to have an FTP set up with the same address as the machine to be able to transfer the files to allow the machine to install the upgrades.

So since I am totally ignorant about FTP's I went searching for them and all I find is these businessPro FTP's that cost lots of money.

Since this recorder is no longer being supported by Alesis and these are the only files I will ever need to install on the recorder the expense does not justify the need...

    So...
I am looking for a simple and free FTP that can do what I need.

OK...Spyware DR. graciously gave me a link where I was able to download and unzip a FTP Server called Golden FTP Server.
However I am at a loss as how to operate this server to get my files from my desktop to my HD24 recorder.
I followed all the instructions that told me how to ready my HD24 for interaction with an FTP Server...the machine is open to an FTP Server...but I do not know how to get my computer to link up with the machine by way of the FTP Server..
But nothing appears in the cue anywhere within the FTP Server to identify a destination.

Sounds like you simply need a file transfer utility, like WS_FTP LE.

BTW, Windows has a built-in FTP transfer utility. It's text-based, command-line stuff but it's easy to use, (for me anyway). Get to a CMD prompt, type FTP and press [Enter]. At the "ftp>" prompt, type ? and press [Enter] to see a list of available commands. Google for how-to instructions.

WS_FTP LE has a GUI (graphical user interface) which many find easier to use.

    More detailed information

Here is the actual instructions (word for word) copied from the Alesis website on how to do what I need to do.

Updating the Alesis HD24 via Ethernet

First reinitialize the HD24 by powering up while holding down the Play and Record buttons. Then the latest HD24 1.21 update can be downloaded at www.alesis.com/hd24 .

When connecting your HD24 to your Windows PC's Ethernet port, you need to use a crossover cable. This looks the same as a regular Ethernet cable, but has a different internal wiring. A crossover cable will often have 'crossover' printed repeatedly along the length of the cable's vinyl jacket. This is not a typical cable for most people to own, and is usually purchased for a specific application or purpose. You can easily find these specialized cables at online retailers such as amazon.com by searching ethernet crossover cable.

Note: connecting to a Macintosh uses a normal Ethernet cable. Also, avoid using a hub as this may make it harder to connect. Here is a update procedure for Windows:

IMPORTANT: only attempt to update via ethernet by connecting your HD24 directly to your computer's ethernet port. Do not attempt through a router or any intermediate device.

1.Go to www.download.com and download a free FTP client for the OS of the computer you will be using and install it, such as FTP Surfer.
2.Go to the Alesis download site and download and unzip the updated HD24 version 1.21 software.
3.On your computer, go to the Start Menu, then Control Panel.
    4.Double-click on Network Connection.
5.Double-click on your Ethernet Connection, click on Properties and ensure Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) is present and checked. If not, then you must install it manually by clicking the Install tab.
6.Double-click on Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) and choose Use this IP Address. Enter in the following.

    IP Address - 192.168.1.101
    SubNet Mask - 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway - 192.168.1.101

    7.Close all windows.
8.Hook up an Ethernet cable from your computer to the HD24 and place the HD24 into FTP server mode from the front panel assembly Utility menu.
9.Open the FTP program your computer. you will be asked what you want your home page to be, type the IP address of the HD24 192.168.1.100
10.Ensure both user and and password are "anonymous" in your FTP program.
11.Once connected to the HD24, drag and drop the new OS. The program will ask you if you want to replace the old version. Answer Yes and follow the onscreen steps to complete the upgrade.

I do have the correct crossover ethernet style cable to use for the transfer..
I have also downloaded and unzipped the proper files from Alesis that are supposed to install on the machine sitting on my desktop .
My problem is with the actual transfer...I can't seem to figure out where to go to open the FTP and load the files into it and then figure out where to go to create the connection from my computer to the machine.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium 64 and the Control Panel options are totally different then the XP Pro I used to have...I cannot find where the TCIP/IP islisted on this OS.

Thank you for your reply Mark62,
The HD24 machine is only ready to receive from an FTP server.
If you notice point #9 the instructions say to open the FTP program from your computer.
So it appears I do have to have anFTP program to be able to transfer the files ionto the HD24 machine.
