    Hi Peter,

I realize what happened. When I tried to recover C: from my external drive, I think it was working and it formatted my C:\ drive, but I had forgotten that when I installed the external drive, the names (Drive letters) were now changed.

Since I've installed another version of Windows, the Acronis bootable disk no longer works at start-up. Do I need to format C: before it will work?

    Thank you,

    bellisimo

Would you please expand on 'no longer works'? What happens when you boot from the Acronis Recovery disk?

In view of your difficulties maybe your geek friend could help you out here - there's no substitute for being in front of the recalcitrant PC!

    Hi Peter,

I just meant that when I try to boot from the Acronis bootable disk it doesn't load up. Do I need to format C: first: My geek friend is on a sailboat somewhere in the Caribbean.

I think I can do this, Peter, I just need to know how to format C:

    Thank you,

    bellisimo

As you have installed XP from a bootable CD I would assume that the boot order set in BIOS (setup) has CD-ROM as the first in the list. Check - if this is the case then you have an issue with the Recovery CD. Did you test it after burning it? Is it clean and free from scratches?

Solution - Install Acronis on your new install of XP Pro and create another Recovery Disk

You don't need to format C:\ - Acronis Recovery will do this if required AFAIK

    Hi Peter,

Sorry for taking so long in getting back to you. In my efforts to recover my files, I obviously made some kind of fatal mistake and, after formatting both my hard drives, a True Image message told me that a backup file was corrupted. I phoned them today and spoke with one of their tech support people. I told him about it and described to him how the blue backup files looked different since I've reinstalled Windows, and he assured me that the backup files are fine, and that when I'm back up and running they will work as they should.

I've loaded XP onto one disk and am now doing a slow format of the second drive, which I felt might be damaged because it had been acting a bit funny. A slow format will tell me, I hope, if the disk is damaged, right?

I'll report back to you as soon as I know where I'm at.

    Thanks again,

    bellisimo

I am sorry to hear of your on going problems.
By slow I guess you mean Full as opposed to Quick format. When complete there may be report on disk condition, i.e. if there are any bad sectors present - it's been a long time since I had the need to format a drive and I do not remember that detail.

Your best bet is to check out the disk with the manufacturer's disk diagnostic software (DOS version from bootable CD) .....

    Thanks, Peter,

I've reinstalled Windows XP on both hard drives and tody I'll try another recovery with a new bootable media disk.

Just to be safe, I'm thinking of turning off my my antivirus and firewall. I wonder it might have had a hand in interuppting my file recovery process. I can disconnect my router when I'm ready to attempt the recovery.

I'll let you know how I make out.

    Thanks again,

    bellisimo

    Hi again, Peter,

Just to be sure, if I make a new Acronis Bootable Disk on one drive C:\ to recover files, can I use the same Bootable Disk to recover files to my slave drive E:\ ?

The reason I ask is that I can't make one on the E:\ drive because it's formatted, and I'd have to install Windows on it in order to make a disk for it.

    Thanks,

    bellisimo

The Recovery Disk is universal, you only require one - it contains a copy of Acronis directly accessible on boot from the CD.
