This is probably the most trvial problem imaginable, but I can't find the solution.

Somewhere buried in XP's dialogues is a tick-box option to display an 'internet connection' icon in the notification area of the taskbar but I can't find it.

    Can anyone assist?

Open up Control Panel and double click Network Connections. Right click on Local Area Connection and select properties. Under the General tab place a check next to Show icon in notification area when connected.
