As the computer shuts down I see that windows is forcing a program to end that seems to not end otherwise. I have disabled everything I don't need at startup but it's still happening. The message flashes by so fast that I can't read it completely. How do I find out what's holding up shutdown?

Hi Alicia. Run the registry file in this link to improve your systems shutdown time. How to Speed Up Windows 7 Desktop and Shutdown.

The tweak also automatically ends non responding tasks that are preventing the computer from shutting down properly. You will have to reboot the computer for the changes to take effect.

SpywareDoctor I did run a video but it doesn't tell me what's holding up shutdown.

I ran the reg file Evan and I'm still getting the same message at shutdown.

I won't be able to go through these steps until after tomorrow and will get back to you when I have completed all of them.

You'll find that information recorded in your Event Log(s). So open it (Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer) and check ;)

I don't know where in the event viewer to look. There is a lot of information there.

On the Overview and Summary page (that's where you get when you open it), you can see anything that was logged in the Last hour, 24 hours or 7 days. So that's where you could start.

Another logical place would be the System log under Windows Logs.

IMHO if the forcing shutdown screen flashes past so quickly that you cannot see it I think you are worrying unnecessarily :) It's no big deal!

Now, if the issue was similar to one I had a few months ago where the screen with the option to force a shutdown appeared for ~5 minutes before the computer shut down then I would most certainly investigate the cause. As you have seen from your video recording the program is not always identified - it was not in my case, but working through the clean boot referenced by Evan eventually turned up the culprit - Acronis. An update to that program resolved the issue.

So, unless you are looking for perfection in performance I suggest you let sleeping dogs lie :D

I had this happen just yesterday... I closed my usual dozen apps I had open and went to shut down....It didn't list any apps to be forced....but then it shut down...

Try this - Close all of your apps and then wait a full minute before shutting down. Does it do the same thing or does it shut down OK?

I tried msconfig. I shut down all the non Microsoft services and it still did the forced app close at shutdown. It doesn't hang, just a slight delay of shutdown.

Then I tried stopping all start up items. It shut down with no problem. I narrowed it down to one item, but when I repeated the whole procedure it was a different app that caused the problem. When I tried again, it was again a different app causing the problem.

Perhaps the apps are not playing nice at shutdown.
