This situation happened to me a couple of days ago and I couldn't find this fix (below) because (a) the computer wouldn't boot and (b) I didn't have it saved as a paper printout when it was needed. Lesson learned.

I had previously posted the identical question regarding Windows 8 to the Windows 8 forum and received this answer:

The fix worked in Windows 8. My question this time is: will this same fix work on Windows 7 under the same conditions? (I mean using the Win7 install disk instead of Win8.)

Win 7 has a pretty powerful repair function. Odds are it'll work.

    Steve,

Thanks! Now I'll be anxiously (not) awaiting my next Windows 7 non-boot situation to try it out. Anyway, I'll have a printout of the corrective steps to use if and when it happens. :)

    Hi Frank.

Yes that process also works on Windows 7.

Many thanks, Evan! This procedure saved me back in April with Win 8 after a system image restore. I'll plan on using it again (using a printout) if and when I have to do so again with Win 7. :)
