A screen message comes up saying: "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device"

The PC is running Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit. I see a Boot (x) but the HDD does not show up. Using repair on the Windows Vista disc doesn't work.

I can get into the BIOS but the HDD is not visible in the boot sequence.

Any thoughts to solve this problem would be appreciated. I am unfamiliar with hardware but I did take off the box's cover and checked the HDD connections as well as blow dusting the inside gently. Thanks.

Sounds like the hard drive is either dead or not plugged in correctly.

What is the history behind the problem? Did the pc just quit working or was it recently put together?

Stopped working suddenly. I did suspect a dead HDD.

When a computer cannot find an Operating System to hand the boot sequence over to, it really has no other choice but to throw up some kind of error message and stop.

As to why it couldn't find an Operating System is usually caused by drive failure ... the very drive that contains the Operating System needed to continue booting the computer. :(

In your case, the fact that the hard drive can no longer be seen anywhere in the BIOS/CMOS Setup is the first indication that something is seriously wrong. If the BIOS cannot even see the hard drive, it certainly won't be able to hand over control to the Operating System that is on it.

Have you had a look inside to make sure ALL connections are clean and secure?

I would check and clean (blow dust out) before tossing anything out. Neil.
