    Hi All!

I am having an issues the screensaver on Vista Home Premium! When it starts it basically hangs the computer. When I reboot the machine and go any where near the Screen Saver settings the machine hangs again and i have to reboot. I have booted into safe mode and made adjustments to screen saver settings but when the machine reboots it has reverted back to the original screensaver settings. (Windows Energy in this case) Do I have a Graphics Card issue potentially or something more sinister?

    Any Help gratefully received.

    Gary

Only what I think of when I find screensaver issues, that is possible spyware/malware.

Have you ever had a third party screensaver (program)? Have you come across one lately, that might be trying to take control, even though you haven't installed it. Run a full malware scan and investigate running a scan with Spybot (I don't let it run continuously in the background, just scan occasionally, because you don't want 2 scanners running at the same time).

Try making basic settings. Turn off themes, Aero, try a blank screensaver, etc.

Hi Gary Browne, You haven't filled in your System Details which will help us to help you.
    Are you running SP2?
I see Matt has asked about other screen savers. I would also ask if any new Software has been added recently? Neil.

    Hi Guys!

Thanks for the reply's! I will put some system details on a bit later! Its actually my Mums Machine which is barely used apart from sending emails. Have had a bit more of a play this morning and starting to think it is not just Screen Saver related as i first thought. It just seems to freeze after you start to use it for a short while, just using the Internet earlier and it froze on me! Wondering if its over heating or would benefit from a fresh install! The machine is set to automatically install updates so would imagine its fully up to date with all relevant Service Packs etc! Will investigate if the machine works long enough!

    Cheers

Yes, fresh install may be the answer. Neil.

Cheers for all the replys guys! I have done a fresh install and am still encountering the same problem. You use the computer for 10-15 Mins and it just freezes. I'm wondering if its overheating? Failing HDD? Its a fairly old machine that Mum uses so wondering if it could be time for a replacement! I've got a few HDD's floating around so might chuck one in just as a test and go from there!

Download and run Open Hardware Monitor, take a screenshot of the program and post a link to the image on http://imgur.com/ so I can see your system temperatures.

Since you have a few spare hard drives definitely try swapping out the one that is currently in the machine and see if that helps to isolate the problem.

Well HDD replaced and the same issue persists! Have decided to replace the machine as it is quite old and not worth wasting the time on I think! Thanks for all your help tho!
