Is there a new way to disable the large context and bookmark menus for google chrome?

    This used to work: http://www.ghacks.net/2013/03/12/how-to-disable-google-chromes-white-context-menu/

but chrome has since updated and now it doesnt work anymore.

Is there a registry modification i can do, or is there a way to reinstall the previous version and than tell google not to automatically update?? Its almost enough to make me not use the browser anymore.

They should really have separate versions for tablets and touch screens (which is who theyre catering to), and the normal default for regular mouse-based computers.

Go to Chrome settings > Advanced > at bottom disable Chrome background running. Delete the scheduled tasks for Chrome updating. May also be a Chrome update service that needs to be disabled. There's also a Chrome registry value at hklm/software/microsoft/windows/current version/run to be deleted. Put that switch back in the shortcut > reboot & see if it works again.

Ok, so I have found at least a temporary fix for this problem, just posted on another help site:

"just go back to v27. look at folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application (this is path for windows 7 64bit) and try first with old chrome.exe or simply delete folder named 28.x.x.x and again try with chrome.exe and/or old_chrome.exe.

in my case, old_chrome worked ok. of course with "--no-new-menu-style ".

but, while you doing that, be off-line! if you even start old version, it will do a update again. so, erase history when you start old version, and go to about:plugins (wrote that in address filed) and disable "google update ". that will do for some time "

Not sure if its permanent but, it isworking for now!

FYI, the same thing occurred in an earlier release of Chrome and the was changed back to the classic menus. The newer menu has been in the dev branch for a while now. Menus are larger because it's easier for those with touchscreens. IMHO google should detect the user's system and provide separate downloads for touchscreen/standard screen.

I only started to use chrome other than occasionally about 6 months ago. But I completely agree either about separate versions (for touch vs desktop/laptop), or to at least have an option available to either tell it that you are on a touch device or youre not, to allow the user to choose, wide menus or normal. But, even in the case of a touch user, cant they just pinch zoom anyway?
