I have a Dell laptop set up on a docking station with a Dell W198FPf monitor. Twice I have had the monitor quit after undocking & redocking the laptop. The display dosen't come back and the power button/light flashes green. I'm on my 3rd monitor and I wanted to know: 1) am I doing something wrong? and 2) are the monitors with the flashing green power buttons repairable?

    1) am I doing something wrong? -> Probably. There is an Fn + F7 ( i think) key combo to activate the second monitor.

If the lappy monitor works - have you looked in Display Properties to see if you need to Enable dual display?

Actually, it is working when I undock. When I re-dock and close the laptop, it fails to display. This doesn't happen every time. It has worked OK many times, but then failed with the flashing green power button... and this has happened twice. The monitors are quite dead after that. I even tried them on a PC and they won't respond.

Hmm. I had similar experience with my Dell Studio 15 laptop but not to where the monitors stopped working completely. Could it be a short in the connector you plug it in?

Nope. I replaced it with a good monitor using the same power and signal cables and the new one worked fine. Put the blinking monitor on another PC and it didn't work there, either.

    According to Dell:

Monitor STFC (Self Test Feature Check)
    • Turn off the monitor
    • Plug the monitor power cord directly into the wall socket to remove any surge protectors or APCs from the troubleshooting equation
    • Unplug the monitor video cable from the back of the computer
    • Turn on the monitor
    • The floating dialog box should appear on screen against a black background. If the issue appears during the STFC, the monitor is defective. Get it replaced

Well, it fails at the first step. You can't turn it off with the switch... it just keeps blinking green no matter how long you push it. It just seems strange that I've had 2 monitors go bad in the same way in the last 4 months. I was hoping someone could tell me the meaning of the flashing green power button.

The blinking green light indicates that your screen is in Stand By mode.
