The upcoming Apple OS X Mavericks (the successor of OS X Mountain Lion) has an appealing feature, Tagging. Every document in OS X Mavericks can be tagged, or even multi-tagged, besides organising them all to folders. Can I do the same in Windows 8?

Add tags or other properties to a file

You cannot add or modify the file properties of some types of files. For example, you can add or modify the properties of Microsoft Office documents and Searches, but you can't add or modify the properties of TXT or RTF files.

    Hi Steve,

Tagging is a long awaited feature by me. Recently I saw it's implementation in Gmail and soon in OS X Mavericks Finder Tags (http://www.apple.com/osx/preview/#tags). I don't know if tagging will change the properties of a file or using another daemon and database to track and index the filename with a full path plus new tags. In the latter case, the tabs in OS X Mavericks may not be transferrable. Moreover, I am expecting to see the tabbing feature has a kind of "local" and "global" type.

I remember long time ago, Windows (Vista?) has a feature allowing user to enter description to a file (basically for photos. But it's not convenient to me and I had to add such a column from Windows Explorer. It could then be used as a kind of tagging.

In the past, I worked on some Document Management Systems and required substantial development to add tags to Office documents. It's good that OS X will have it soon, so Office for Mac may take this advantage. I'd also like to see it in Windows and preferrably tags can follow a document transfer.

Thanks lj50. That's a simple way to tag files. I'm out now.
