My primary (boot) partition is showing almost full(14.1GB free of 692Gb total) even after running a full disk cleanup. Running defragmentation (11 passes) still shows 20% fragmented. Tried "check for drive errors" which said it couldn't be done while in use but provided option to do the check on restart which resulted in an unbootable condition on restart. Used my recovery discs to reboot the computer which worked but it said there was insufficient space to save the user data. Tried 3rd party partitiong software to extend the partition but it errored out. Out of ideas - anybody got some new way to find(fix) this problem.

Try moving a couple hundred gigs off of it to another drive to give it some breathing room.

There aren't any couple hundred gigs to delete or move - I deleted lots of stuff but the indicator continues to display the same amount. The display bar is in red.

    Try emptying the Recyle Bin.

Try A. and B. below only if:
    1. The hard drive passes diagnostics, and

    2. CHKDSK has repaired the damaged file system.

    • Temporarily move the contents of these folders:

      C:\Users\{windows_user_name}\Contacts
      C:\Users\{windows_user_name}\Desktop
      C:\Users\{windows_user_name}\Documents
      C:\Users\{windows_user_name}\Music
      C:\Users\{windows_user_name}\My Images
      C:\Users\{windows_user_name}\Pictures
      C:\Users\{windows_user_name}\Saved Games
      C:\Users\{windows_user_name}\Searches
      C:\Users\{windows_user_name}\Videos

      off onto another drive.

    • Try emptying the Recyle Bin.

Ran the Seagate Diagnostics (a 5 hour exercise) :

    --------------- SeaTools for Windows v1.2.0.8 ---------------
    6/8/2013 2:48:37 PM
    Model: ST31500341AS
    Serial Number: 9VS2TNWL
    Firmware Revision: CC4H
Fix All Long - Pass 6/8/2013 2:48:37 PM

I suspect the readout of the drive is incorrect. However it senses and displays the disk usage is malfunctioning but I have no way of testing this. Probably a corruption in the master file table?

I'm saying that I think the problem might lie in the detection(measurement) of the disk used/unused space. I guessing this happens in the Master File Table. I'm further guessing that these records are corrupted. Some stuff I read indicates this would be unfixable without reformatting which I'm not about to do. I suppose I'll have to keep using it as is and keep hoping it wont crash.

Well good luck. Running on a hard disk which is corrupted [even logically] means much greater chance of data loss.

Its up to you whether you are ready to take that chance.

    _ALL_ hard drives fail.

That's why you need to keep a back up (copy) of whatever files you feel you cannot live without. Professional pricing for attempts to retrieve files from a 'dead' hard drive typically run between a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars (USD).

Well, am I the dummy. Just to prove my assumptions I downloaded a folder analysis software from Key Metric Software (fs6) to explore the innards of the disc and discovered that buried down in C:\users\Paul\AppData\Local Low\Google\GoogleEarth there was oodles of gigabytes of stuff. Deleteing all that got me back to a clean partition with lots of unused space. Thanks all of you for your help.

I would strongly second that. You might also want to have a full backup just in case.
