Greetings once again.. An acquaintance of a friend gave me an ACER Aspire 5532 (Windows 7 Home Premium OA (64 bit) because it displays "invalid partition table" when started. I attempted to get into the BIOS setup via <F2> and it requests "Enter CURRENT Password ". I enter the password the individual has been using since originally purchasing the unit years ago and it generates a "password check Fail" "press any key" response. My question is whether it is asking for the user password or administrator password, which the individual claims they never set up. Thanks in advance for any assistance with either the password issue or the original problem of the partition table.

    Regards
    Carl

Due to the open, public nature of this forum, any assistance given to help circumvent security measures, even for legitimate purposes, would be available for unscrupulous individuals to use for illegitimate purposes.

Doc... I am fully aware of that and only need to know if someone knows which password it is requesting (unless that information is a also considered a breach of sorts) .. I am not looking for any illicit advice.. Thank you for responding.

It is asking for a BIOS password that is different than the Windows user passwords.

Like Steve said, you need the BIOS password. Also note:

Taken from the Aspire 5532 manual.

If the owner doesn't remember setting a BIOS password, he'll need to ask the supplier from where he purchased the laptop.

It is common knowledge that removing the CMOS battery will reset/remove the BIOS password. Easy task on a desktop PC, quite something else on a laptop (may even requiring de-soldering).

From info I see on "The Interweb" it looks like the only way you can 'reset' the BIOS password for that type of Acer is to get the BIOS chip replaced...
