My compaq laptop stopped working. It was Windows 7. I'm using my older laptop, a Dell with Windows XP. I purchased a hard drive enclosure so I could get my files. I see them transferring on the screen, but when it's done I can't find them! I've looked on the internet to see how to find them and I've tried everything. I write books, I need those files. Someone PLEASE help me! What am I doing wrong?? Help!

    Welcome to WindowsBBS:)

What "transfer" method are you using?

A simple copy and paste should work...the file would end up exactly where you tell them to go.

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for the reply, but I think I might have led you down the wrong path. The files I'm talking about seeing being transferred are the ones the hard drive enclosure is showing on the screen being transferred. Once they're all transferred into the computer I can't find them. Apparently, the enclosure is transferring them from the old hard drive, but as I said, I can't find them on the computer they're transferred to! I hope this makes sense. I'm willing to try anything. As I said, I'm an author and I lost books!

Thanks to all who can help me!:)

    Please answer Steve's question ....

    Copy/paste or Cut/paste or Move ????

Detail of the hard drive enclosure is irrelevant at this stage.

I can't copy & paste them. The computer won't come on. I took out the hard drive and used the enclosure to send them to another computer. On the screen, it showed the files being moved, I assume to the new computer, but I cannot find them. Does that help?

I'll try to simplify matters .....

I guess you want to transfer files from the old hard drive in the external enclosure to your old laptop running Windows XP - correct?

In Windows Explorer you opened up the external drive and highlighted the files you wanted to copy across - correct

Did you then right click on the selected files and select Cut or Copy ?

Did you then navigate to the folder on the XP hard drive where you wanted the files to be copied to and right click in a blank space in the right hand pane of Explorer and select paste ?

We posted at virtually the same time .....
    The question is how

Are the files still on the old hard drive ? - if they were simply copied to the laptop they should be. Copy them across again to a folder of your choice.

Have you used the Search function in Windows Explorer to search for the files by extension, i.e. for *.doc or 8.docx if they are Word files.

When I plug the enclosure into the computer, a little box shows up and shows the files being moved, but once it's done, I can't find them. I'm not computer savvy, so you're probably asking me the right questions, I just don't know the right answers! I have microsoft works, don't know if that makes a difference or not. I'm about to give up! I tried the search you mentioned, nothing comes up....

NO - I was a little slow on this, but I think what you are seeing is the Auto run dialogue headed Searching for Content with a progress bar beneath - see screen shot below (from Windows 7). NO FILES ARE BEING MOVED. That is the reason why you cannot find the files.

Follow the instructions in the screen shots below - all from XP (I plugged an external drive into my old XP box to get these). Note - the final screenshot is in the next post - 5 attachments is the limit/post

It is absolutely vital that you keep a backup of your important data on independent external media - CD/DVD, Pen Drive or External Hard Drive to cover for situations like this.

Your problem, I already know, you need to download (diskgen) this software can check (I bought a hard disk box, so I can get my file. I saw them on the screen, but when it did so, I can't find them!) Your mobile hard disk data, if still can't see the data, explain your HP HDD data has been damaged, will only make professional data recovery to help the master
