I know how important it is to not open attachments unless you are pretty sure who it's from and that it MAY not contain boogeymen, but I am wondering if it would be safe to undo that message warning that pops up everyone time you do open an attachment. I had it unchecked on my old machine, but now that I have this new one, it won't let me! It's a brand, new XP and when an attachment is opened it won't let me click the box that says to open mail anyway without asking. Is there a place to uncheck this or should I just leave it alone? One reason I had it unchecked on the other machine is that I get mail a lot of mail from AOL people and you all know how many darn windows you have to go through to see anything! This was the main reason I had that feature unchecked.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

    :)

    Hey Panda

I'm assuming that OE6 in XP is the same as mine in 98se.

The Options>Security tab has the check box about not allowing attachments to be opened that might be a virus.

I remember having that checked and all my emails with attachments gave me a little icon and a nag note that said it had protected me.:)

To my mind, that option is nothing but a PITA and serves no useful purpose!

The option to not allow attachments is a good one if you know how to control it. You can control which attachments are allowed and not allowed thru the Folder Options in the Start Menu>Settings. You click on the file type and then click Edit. Then you uncheck Confirm Open After Download. This will make OE allow the attachment. Some file types can't be edited such as EXE and COM. But those aren't any good to be getting in the first place.

shadowhawk--Unchecking that Confirm Open after Download box used to eliminate the Download dialog box (for that particular file type) which gave the choice to Save or Open a file prior to download. If that is still the case, it would seem the cure for eliminating the Open Attachment nagbox is worse than the disease. (Or some analogy like that. )

Ok you two. Thanks for the tips, but you seem to forget that I'm dealing with Xp now! First, I had to hunt and peck to find SETTINGS! Then when I went to the file types I had to select individual files that I remember come in my mail. Then I had to click an ADVANCED button, not an EDIT one. THEN....... once I got there the box that says CONFIRM OPEN AFTER DOWNLOAD was already UNCHECKED! Sorry....don't mean to yell.
    :(

So. Now what? I remember it being an easy tweak, but never wrote it down in my trusty puter book folder. It's out there somewhere. Just have to keep looking.

    Thanks everyone.....

    :)
