Hi, is there a way to search the favorites in IE 5.5, as there is in Netscape (4.7 versions) bookmarks, by using "ctrl-f" (find)? Thanks

    Indirectly.

    Do a Find > Files
    Look in > Windows\Favorites > Include SubFolders
Then do File > Save Search

This creates an icon on the desktop called All Files.ind

Rename the "All Files" to whatever you like, and either leave the icon here, or you can drag it to the QuickLaunch bar.
Then use this icon whenever you want to do a search.

find in IE 5.5 - fix suggested doesn't

Thank you for reply, WhitPhil. However, I do not have the choices you specified. The "crt-f" is present, but it is merely a word search on the active web page opened. The menu item says:
"find (on this page) ctrl-f ". It does not give
"find > files > look in "... etc. Any other suggestions? Do I need to change anything in options/preferences to get the features you mention?
Please note that this is for IE 5.5 not windows explorer.

Phil was talking about clicking on your Windows START button and going to "Find" .

larkin-- Similar to what WhitPhil has suggested, but this will run the search immediately.
Click Start|Find|Files or Folders, enter a key word about the Favorite in "Named ", C:\Windows\Favorites in "Look in ". Click "Find now" to immediately run the search.
Remember that the "Key Word" has to be in the title of the Favorite. "Find now" will not search text in the body of the Favorite. So when you create the Favorite you want to pick Key Words for titles carefully to maximize the chances of finding it again!

    Jim/larkin:

    Just to clarify.

What I proposed, runs immediately. But what it does is allow you to have an icon to click on, instead of doing Start > Find > Files and entering the Favorites folder.
All of that info is saved, and all you need to enter is the text you are searching for.

WhitPhil--Thought I followed your instructions to a T about creating All Files.fnd on my Desktop, and sure enough that worked. However,
    1) No "Find now" search was started as part of creating All Files.fnd, and
    2) When I clicked on the All Files.fnd Desktop icon, I got a normal Find window with the Look in field changed back to C:\ rather than reading C:\Windows\Favorites.
Does not seem to answer larkin's need or accomplish much except create a generic Find shortcut.
Maybe I am missing something.

I'm not sure what you/I are doing differently.

On my PC (Win98FE), if I do a Find > Files, browse to another directory, then do a Save Search.

The resulting Icon when run, opens the Find window at that directory.

Without speculating or questioning why you find or need this capability, perhaps a third party app "url manager" would help.

See or scroll to offering of app "Urlbase ". This looks like the one offered here that will most likely serve your purpose and then some OR Perhaps one of the others:
    http://www.webattack.com/Freeware/misctools/fwurlorg.shtml

NOTE*Perhaps a few oganization, tips, shortcuts or workarounds could be offered by members if the whats & whys were a bit clearer.

    For example:
Using the "History" icon on the IE Toolbar lists your urls and can be sorted by date, size, most visited, by order visit today, or it also has a "Search" function for typing keywords.

OR a workaround such as hitting the cntrl+N key to open new IE window and typeing c:\windows\favorites in the address
bar and hitting enter. When favvorites folder is displayed click in the pane to make sure focus is there and then hit your cntrl+F shortcut which will dispaly your search dialogue box. As a side effect the typed url should also be available in the address dropdown box for future use or you can now dragNdrop url shortcut to links bar for ease of access.

Can probably come up with a few more ideas if I had a clearer picture of what you needed and how you want it to function.

WhitPhil--I don't know either. Have repeated what I reported several times.
    I also run Win98FE, but IE6.
Be nice to hear from larkin whether anything so far has worked.

WhitPhil--If I change your advice as follows:
    "Do a Find > Files
    Look in > Windows\Favorites > Include SubFolders
    Click "Find now "
Then do File > Save Search ... "
I get the Find results in the original Find: All files window, and the AllFiles.fnd file on the Desktop remains set to whatever "Look in" location I specified.
So, for whatever reason, I have to initiate the Find now action. Otherwise it is as you suggested.

    Glad you figured it out.
For whatever reason, on my version you do not need to do the Find Now.
