A friend of mine was having problems with Windows Update and Microsoft support people had him convert his fat32 system to NTFS. Now that he has NTFS, his sound card, modem, scanner, and other hardware have quit working and are no longer recognized by windows.

NTFS shouldn't do that. But occasionally the convert process itself doesn't go perfectly.

Things I'd suggest to him at this point - and in this order:

    1. Complete virus scan using current def files.
    2. Check for a BIOS update. If found, install it.
    3. From a cmd prompt, chkdsk /f
    4. From a cmd prompt, sfc /scannow (and the install CD will be needed).
    5. Remove any problem devices from device manager, shutdown and remove them physically, start up, shut back down.
    6. Replace devices one at a time and restart after each to let them detect and load. If any have driver updates, reload the device using the latest drivers.
