Hi, 1st of all this is the most informative windows help site I've been to, and I've been to a lot already.
I just installed XP home. I wanted to update it so I tried to download SP1 from microsoft. But all I get at the end of the download, after waiting for a verrrry long time, is a message saying "windows update error(0x800a138f) ". So then I obtained a SP1 CD. But all I get during installation from CD is "service pack setup cancelled ". I'm getting very frustrated. Need to install it cause I cant play games. Please help me.

Here is the recommended fix for this error with 2K SP3 and I imagine it will work with XP SP1 as well.

    1. Start~Run~regsvr32 iuctl.dll /u /OK to un-register the library.

    2. Start~Search~Files and Folders. Look for iuengine.dll and iuctl.dll.

    3. Delete all occurrences of these two files, deleting the ones in %SystemRoot%\System32 last.

    4. Reboot and try the SP install again.

I would add to Newt's advice!

Download the SP and do not install online, but from HD.

But do the below before installation.

    1. Clean the system of all temps

    2. Clean registy if you know how

    3. Full virus scan

    4. Check device manager for any device errors

    5. Terminate all startups, virus scanners and firewalls.

    Newt,

well I followed the instructions you gave me, I deleted the files. Then I would search them again just to check if they were deleted but they keep showing up. Its like they cant be deleted.

You ARE searching for only these files, right?

    iuengine.dll
    iuctl.dll

and imediately after you delete them do you search again to find them still there?

If so try deleting them from safe mode.

I don't know why you can't delete them but if you can not then try the install anyway it may work.

NOW YOU DID UNDERSTAND WHAT I MENT BY DOWNLOADING BEFORE INSTALL?

If not, do not install online but download the entire Service pack to your HD then run if from there.

    Hi.

XP has a cache of installed files. If you or an installing program changes them, it will pull them from the cache and reinstall them. Pretty neat huh. Look for those two files in:

    C:\windows\system32
    C:\windows\system32\dllcache

    and most likely also in:

    C:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386

The last one being created when you tried to install SP1. If you can't get there through windows, open a dos box and type:

    del c:\(path here)\filename.xxx

Use the paths listed above and do this for each file in each of the three directories. That will do it. If any of the files are open, the system won't let you delete them. In that case, try the above in safe mode. If that doesn't work, you need to boot from a floppy and do the same thing. Windows won't be running them and the files should be ok to delete.

Giles is correct! I am so used to it I forgot. Go to My computer dbl click drive c: go to tools-folder options-view and select
"Show hidden files and folders ".

Then do your search this should find all the files to delete.

    Right on Giles!

This may be too simple but I also had a problem installing SP1. My solution was to do a full scan of my C drive on its next boot up.

Right click C drive - select Properties - Tools - Error checking - Check now - then check boxes for Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

Click start and elect to do the disk scan on next bootup.

Got this from an MS tech.
