I must be the lucky one since I don't see that anyone else is having difficulty this morning. Woke up, did some of my usual morning routine (on a perfectly stable system) and saw that windows had installed critical updates (136?!) and needs to restart. Restarted, now complete chaos. 1) click on any link in an outlook e-mail and outlook locks up. If IE was already open, it locks up also. 2) IE locks up constantly on any random site. 3) IE constantly reports a script error on any one of 10 or more sites that I regularly visit "Object doesn't support property or method 'writeTokenValue'" 4) Google toolbar is gone from IE.

I normally restart every 7-10 days just because, today's restart was solely due to Windows insistance because of updates.

So, I tried doing a system restore to just before the updates this morning - fails every time because "Windows could not access a file" possibly due to AV software. I currently have my AV permanently disabled. Tried other restore points as well, no go.

I am in a bad spot here, can't do anything.

--> Which Antivirus do you use.

--> When was the last time you did a scan using this Antivirus?

--> When did you set up this System, I ask because 136 updates is the number of updates that you would expect when you are just installing Windows Updates forthe first time...

--> CCleaner, if you have it run it (to clear unnessary temp. files and to clean the cache.

--> If you don't have CCleaner dowload it and run it.

    I use bitdefender.

It does a full scan weekly, I just did a manual the other day and it is not currently reporting any issues.

Been on this install for about a year I think??

Run ccleaner several times a week.

I just wish I could get back to a restore point before this morning but so far no luck, even with a safe mode boot.

Got to agree that with this many updates, seem like it has never updated.

Look and see if you have this update. Security Update KB2823324 If so, uninstall it and see what happens.

Also, you need to do more scans than Bit Defender. That only finds certain things and not everything. Try running Malware Bytes after it is downloaded and updated.

    Link for Malware Bytes

Don't worry about the advertisement in the middle of the page. Just Run or Save Malware Bytes

I also have Malware Bytes and it shows nothing. I checked the update log and it says it only installed 1 critical update this morning - I SWEAR that is not what I saw.

Maybe head over to the Malware section and do what is asked. Broni is very good at what he does there. Just follow his instructions.

FIXED! I ran system file checker in safe mode again and it still reported that there were corrupt files found that could not be fixed. Checking the log the only file I saw with an issue was, of all things, windows media player(.exe) due to a "hash mis-match ". So I pulled a copy off another Win7 machine and replaced it, then ran System Restore in Safe Mode again (for the 5th or 6th time?) and this time it worked! Took me back to before the automatically installed 'Windows critical update' (and this was the only thing affected/installed per the Windows log yesterday morning when all this started). Now everything is back to normal, no IE script errors on every site I go to, no lockups.

I never did suspect malware/virus and I am now more certain than ever that that update for whatever reason corrupted my system. How I came up with "136" updates I'll never know, but would have bet $100 that was what I saw.

    Hello Mr. Bill,
Is there something wrong with that security update: "KB2823324 "? Should it be uninstalled?
