As stated, my computer keeps crashing.
This computer is 3 1/2yrs. old and it has been crashing a few times a year since year two, however, since last week it's been crashing several times a day.

    The crash:
The screen goes black and the tower start revving - it doesn't respond to anything I try, (including trying to bring up the the task manager).
The only way out is to do a hard shutdown at the tower.

I saw a Critical event 41 listed in the Event Viewer, which has me worried, but I don't know if it's responsible for these crashes.

(Sidenotes: I had my computer checked for malware over the weekend and broni said it was clean.
This system was a Vista computer purchased with a Winows 7 upgrade disk.)

I would truly appreciate some assistance in determining what's wrong and whether or not it can be fixed. Thank you.

What are the temps? Run HWMonitor and post a screenshot, (example below).

(Note: The download link on that HWMonitor page is over on the right side labeled "1.22 setup, english ").

Open a command prompt (type cmd in the Search programs and files box on the Start menu and press the Enter key).

Copy & paste the following line in the command window: wevtutil qe system /rd:true /f:text /q: "*[System[(Level=1 or Level=2 or Level=3)]]" >%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$

To paste in the command window, right-click inside the command window, and from the menu click Paste (you first have to select & copy the line above!)

From the Notepad Window that opens, copy & paste the first 15 Events.

I just wanted to add that the computer seems like its trying to go into sleep mode - but at completely inappropriate times (while being used) and is unsuccessful and it just gets stuck - necessitating the hard shut down.

(That may be inaccurate, but I just wanted to share that in the event it might be helpful.)

I don't know how to go into the BIOS, but I guess you were suggesting that the battery might be dying.

Since the clock and date on the lower right task bar have always been correct would that rule out the BIOS battery?

    The temperatures seem fine.
(Thank you, SpywareDr for the link to CPUID.)

Arie, after reading the section you recommended, and going through the list, I next ran Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool and it didn't find any problems there either.

Is there anything else I should check before concluding that's it's a hardware problem?

See Entering System Setup in the Service Manual

I suggest you run Dell Diagnostics as detailed on page 33 of the Setup Guide

~ Just an update on my progress so far.

    1. I have never overclocked this computer.
The article suggested disabling overclocking. I checked all of the options among the BIOS settings and that option was not listed.
While researching how to disable overclocking in this computer, I was told that "Dell and other OEM computer manufacturers have limited bios options so as to prevent users from overclocking and voiding their warranties on their products. "

    2. I ran the complete Dell Diagnostics Tool and the Memory passed all of the tests. It also passed the tests run by the Windows Diagnostic Tool.

    3. All of the hardware tests, including those for the Power Supply, passed
the above mentioned tests. Also, the Power Supply light on the back of the computer is on and green.

    4. I posted the results of the temperature readings in my third post in this thread and SpywareDr said they were fine.

    5. I have not, as yet, restored the system to default factory settings since I'm still backing up all of my files and family photos.
(I need to pick up one more flash drive to finish the job.)

Lastly, I checked the BIOS and the time and date are correct.

I understand that there is a chance that the restoration could fail, which would require me to reinstall the OS.
Since this computer is a Vista machine with a Windows 7 upgrade, would I have to reinstall Vista and then do the upgrade again to Win 7?
(I'm trying to be prepared for all contingencies.)

~ Thank you again for your help.

~ Solving this computer problem is important to me, however other important matters
have demanded my full attention of late, but I'd like to continue now, to see if there is
a way to resolve this problem.
I appreciate everyone's help and understanding. Thank you.

You didn't load a dump file.

Make sure you right-click the debugwiz.exe, and choose Run as administrator from the menu.

You're right, I made a mistake, I didn't use the correct path for 64 bit.
Now that I've changed that I've run into a different problem.
Here's what happened: (I did choose Run as Administrator)

I copied the path for 64 bit
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v511/Ladyfirst/Procedure1.jpg
    I pasted it
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v511/Ladyfirst/procedure2.jpg
I clicked "open" and immediately everything disappears but this )
    and this box appeared
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v511/Ladyfirst/Procedure3.jpg

I don't mean to be so inept, but I tried changing the path
    from this:
    C:\Program Files\Debugging Tools for Windows (x64)\ )
    to this:
    C:\Program Files\Debugging Tools for Windows (x64)\)
but I get the same results.

I'm sorry that I'm confused about this, but how do I proceed?

    You are doing it wrong.

You are browsing using the Browse button next to Dump file to be analyzed and browse to your debugging tools. That won't work.

You'll need to select the Advanced check-box and click the Browse button next to Location of the debugging tools… for that.
