You've probably heard about all the doom & gloom about the 'death' of the PC. Most of the so-called 'experts' are blaming it on tablets; instead of a new PC, people opt to buy a tablet instead.

Well, if you want to distinguish between a PC and a tablet, I guess PC sales are slowing. Point is that in most reports, PC's are only defined as 'Desktop PC', while there is a separate category for Laptop/Netbook. If you add these devices to the PC category (as I would argue they should), the slowdown in PC sales is far less dramatic as is portrayed right now.

Furthermore I'd like to add that PC hardware has matured to a point that you can keep your PC in use much longer. Fife to seven years or more is no problem, while in the early days of Windows 9x you'd have to get new hardware (or at least substantially upgrade your hardware) every three to four years to be able to run current software.

Windows 7 had basically the same hardware requirements as its predecessor (Vista) and Windows 8 can actually run well on lower spec hardware.

Yes, people that only use a computing device to access the Internet to view some web sites, sent the occasional email and play a simple game could choose a tablet instead. Most other people (for example office workers) still prefer a 'real' computer, be it laptop or desktop PC.

So… when you will get your next device, what will it be?

My next computer will be a custom built desktop. I may re-use some of the components that are in my current computer now but since I play games I need a powerful gaming machine to handle the high end system requirements. Besides, who doesn't like having a fast desktop machine. It definitely helps your productivity when you need to get work done.

Either rip this desktop apart and rebuild it or just buy everything new and build a desktop from scratch.

My next will be a new laptop. I'm still using a Latitude d830, which runs very well and meets all of my needs. But it's a 15" widescreen. My next will be a 15.5 widescreen with a built in camera.

Last xmas I built myself a new desktop from the ground up, which will serve well for the next 5-6 years at least.

My last project, a month ago, was building an HTPC using Openelec installed on a Zotac ID82 mini computer. Total cost start to finish, less than $300 US.

For me, an Internet tablet is a waste, though I do have a 2 yr old Kindle Touch for ebooks, black+white only.

I have too many tablets and the apps are reaching limitation. All PCs have been migrated to Mac while Windows 7 & 8 virtual machines are 99% idled in them. The next tasks will be taking off Windows from Msc to free some space.

I don't put notebooks or netbooks in the same category as PCs. Portability is certainly criteria enough to separate them and put notebooks, netbooks, and tablets into the same category as smart-phones.

Smartphones - an error to leave off the survey in my opinion - should be there because many many users are foregoing PCs for smartphones too, not just tablets.

And it is not just because of portability but also because consumers are tired of paying exorbitant prices to multiple service providers each month for the same or similar services.

FTR, I will give up PCs when I am blind and can no longer see my multiple 22" monitors, and when they pry my full sized keyboard and mouse from my dead hands.

    I still call it BS!

You can use a smartphone to browse the web & do some email/social media, but that's about it. Can't do any PC-type work on it.

I cannot argue with that as I feel exactly the same way. But the marketing weenies for these small, portable devices are doing an excellent job at convincing users otherwise.

But frankly, that may just be the Luddite in me, and many others. I look at schools today and many kids today are learning to do everything from small, portable tablets, and the like.

I am not saying I like it, or agree with it, but it is the way it is.

    It's Alive!!

    Hi Arie,

You might be interested to know that, after months of frustration and disappointment, there has been a major change to my epic saga of eternal torment ... I mean, upgrading to Windows 8 Pro 32-bit.

I used Windows 8's "refresh" and like Madeleine Kahn in Young Frankenstein, my system feels "refweshed" now!

While the process cleaned out everything but Microsoft apps, and required me to reinstall much of what I had before, it was the right thing to do, and the four days following that were worth the effort.

Using the "removed apps" HTML list that was created, I only reinstalled things I really need (yes, I did a needs analysis on my own PC usage) and the system is running smoothly, for the most part.

There are still some areas where it could be much better, but really, very few.

And I still like Win 8 Pro; actually, I like it more now. I may re-do the "start menu" work-around you posted; the one on the Taskbar, rather than a Start8 type thing. But that's not necessary now, either.

Thanks to you and all who have helped me, given advice, and so on. I appreciate everyone's help.

    Cheers!:D

I wonder how well a Windows Smart Phone does Office apps. Anyone know?

As for the hardware, if I can figure out the size of the MB in my older HP Pavilion, I'd replace it with a new CPU and start from there, as it was a good box, with excellent add-ons, and has room for expansion. Right now, it sits, with a bad Disk controller, waiting to be trashed, or renovated.

My desktop is about 7 years old now - still running Win XP. My next machine will probably be a 15.6" laptop with Windows (probably Win 9!). DW will probably move up from her ASUS netbook to maybe a 12" lap-top sometime. The ASUS is also a Win XP set-up.

Neither of us are interested in tablets. The screens need cleaning too often to get rid of finger marks! We're Luddites enough to think that a phone is a device for direct voice communication and have no interest whatever in smart phones.

in my humble opinion ... they're not so smart, those phones! I still think XP is the best Windows OS of all.

An ISV I know has alluded to Win 9 coming very soon, with a unique name, as well. Not Vista, but equally different, like "Blue" or some such name. And it's timed to come out for my birthday, in August!

I haven't seen anything else on it though.

I just got a new Win 7 desktop 6 months ago as well as an iPad2 about 8 months ago. (This one was free, not really like Apple that much anyway).
I really have no idea what I would purchase. Given what is happening today in the PC and Tablet world, I still would prefer Windows but can't really say for the future.

I also very much agree with Alex
Still have a netbook with XP

    I love it!

I have an iPad1, also free! I'd never pay more than necessary for any Apple product; they're the true monopolists in the Tech world!
